Napoleon's elite Old Guard had the priviledge of being allowed to complain freely, and their grenadiers were called "les Grognards" because they would not stop kvetching. I was unaware of this particular part of the origin of the word, and now I have a mental image of Statler and Waldorf as Napoleonic grenadiers and it's the greatest thing.
