One time I caught my kids trying to drink a can of PBR. I made them finish it and watched their disgusted expressions as I forced them to each ingest an entire can. Both of them threw up within minutes, puking their little eyes out. Now they know not to drink such swill and to spend the extra money on craft beer instead

Or do what I did to my kids to get them to wear a loving bicycle helmet. They wouldn't listen to my story of when I was their age and got hit by a car. So I just had the wife drive slowish and threw a melon in front of the car, that finally got through their little kid head that cars are loving dangerous. We just had the melon in the fridge and obviously you can't come up with a lesson for loving everything a child decides to do, but when you can, that teaches them better than a spanking.

My dad was at work, my mother could have been doing any one thing with my sisters, dinner or just chores. It only took a minute for me to slip out. A neighborhood kid brought me back, and I got a swat on the butt. The one time in my life. I never walked up to the highway again because I got that if I did, I'd get a swat on the butt.

It's possible that just the other kid talking to you helped you realize why you shouldn't do that, but your parents spanking you upset you so much that that was all you remembered.
