Come to me .... and live forever.

That's right, Ink Master is back already Tuesday nights on SPIKE at 10pm Eastern. And this time, there's bad blood in the water. Tattoo artists from around the country compete not only for $100,000, an editorial feature in Inked magazine, and the coveted title of "Ink Master," but for the bragging rights of defeating their bitter competition. Each of the artists has a personal tattoo rival, including two of the most infamous rivals in Ink Master history from season 3.

Each week they'll be educated with a Flash Challenge to hone their skills needed later in the competition. Next comes the Elimination Tattoo, with the winner of the previous challenge getting to pair all of the human canvases to the contestants. The best tattoos of the week are recognized, while the weakest artists are called back into the shop after deliberation by the judges, and one of them is told to pack their machines and close up shop.

RIVALRIES

Joshua Hibbard - Artist at Inspired Tattoo from Portland, OR with 10 years experience. The most despised contestant from Ink Master season 3, he regularly reviled his fellow artists and managed to survive until getting eliminated with four artists remaining. Believing the industry needs to improve its professional standards, including one of his biggest critics in Dunn, he aims to go all the way this season.
vs.
Jason Clay Dunn - Owner/Artist at Tattoo Alchemy from Montclair, CA with 20 years experience. A leading artist in the Neo-Asian style, he became one of the most vocal critics of Josh, accusing him of being a flip-flopping trace-and-tattoo artist who was all talk. Howerver, Dunn managed to place sixth two seasons ago, just one spot below Hibbard. With his no nonsense personality clashing against Hibbard's tactical instigation, and a new $100,000 on the line, this rivalry has the potential to explode.

Angel Bauta - Owner/Artist at Puncture Tattoo Studio from Brooklyn, NY with 18 years experience. He specializes in many styles of color and grey wash tattoos, angry at the lack of respect his former protégé has shown, abruptly leaving his shop without notice.
vs.
Cris Element - Artist at Leathernecks and Bullseye from Brooklyn, NY with 8 years experience. A self taught artist, he openly regards old school tattoos as "outdated," and wants to show up his arrogant mentor by proving his superior skills. It's the battle of the Brooklyn Boys.

Julia Carlson - Artist at Ink Obsession from Brown Mills, NJ with 5 years experience. With an apprenticeship of only six months, Julia is determined to gain the respect she feels she deserves, hindered by co-worker and veteran Caroline, whom she feels is jealous of her young talent.
vs.
Caroline Evans - Artist at Ink Obsession from Bradley Beach, NJ with 15 years experience. A mainstay in a male-dominated industry, she's won awards for her corrections in ink. Although she just wants her co-worker to be the best that she can be, that doesn't come without a healthy dose of youthful cynicism. It's the rookie vs. the veteran.

LT - Artist at East Providence Tattoo from Providence, RI with 3 years experience. Specializing in realism and black and grey, LT feels he is overlooked and underrated, feeling he has paid his dues and covets the recognition reaped by his contemporaries.
vs.
Ty'Esha Reels - Artist at 401 Ink Tattoo from Providence, RI with 6 years experience. A Native American tatoo artist who specializes in color and who was shown up by LT at an expo, being bested for best black and grey tattoo despite having twice the experience. She believes LT has yet to earn his stripes and looks to turn embarrassment into redemption. Who will be the top dog in Rhode Island?

Emily Elegado - Artist at Roses & Ruins Tattoo from Charleston, SC with 6 years experience. Spending three years completing a traditional tattoo apprenticeship, she is known for her work in realism and her very real attitude. Angry that Aaron Is doesn't show her respect and started dating her co-worker, she wants to send him back to Tampa with his tail between his legs.
vs.
Aaron "Is" Michalowski - Co-Owner/Artist at Bloodline Tattoo from Tampa, FL with 16 years experience. His experience in photorealism, dotwork, and sacred geometry has landed him features in several tattoo publications. After doing a guest spot at Emily's shop, they were immediately at odds, and his carefree attitude only served to escalate a home turf beef.

Ryan Eternal - Artist at Hart & Huntington from Orlando, FL with 9 years experience. A military veteran who picked up the tattoo trade while stationed in South Korea, his dreams of fame were almost ruined when a car accident left his hand severely damaged. But the new school artist has recovered and he's looking to dominate his former idol.
vs.
Mark Longenecker - Owner/Artist at Endless Summer from Cocoa Beach, FL with 20 years experience. A true surfer whose tattoos have been exhibited in conventions around the world, ranging from tropical to Japanese. He is furious that Eternal is trying to steal his customers and encroach on his territory, determined to defend it. As Mark puts it, "He wants to be me."

Tim Lees - Artist at Propaganda Tattoo from San Diego, CA with 17 years experience. Overcoming homelessness and self-taught tattooing, he specializes in surrealism and portraiture, winning many awards on the convention circuit. After helping his rival build his shop, the two had a falling out that resulted in Lees leaving, feeling backstabbed and bitter.
vs.
Cleen Rock One - Owner/Artist at Chrome Gypsy Tattoo from Las Vegas, NV with 19 years experience. An Illinois shop owner whose neo-traditional and new school approaches to ink landed him guest spots in studios nationwide. Moving out west, he met Tim Lees, who helped him build and open his Vegas shop. But he felt that Lees didn't meet his professional standards, leading to him leaving a month after opening. Lees wants to avenge himself in what is being called "The Pride War."

Erik Siuda - Owner/Artist at Ghost Gallery Tattoo from North Bellmore, NY with 18 years experience. Born and raised in Brooklyn, Erik developed a career as a graffiti artist before studying at the School of Visual Arts and gaining versatility with pseudo traditional, new school, realism, and Japanese styles. He actually met his rival Don during a casting for Ink Master season 2, and the two butted heads from the start.
vs.
Don Peddicord - Co-Owner/Artist at Tattoo Dynasty from Baltimore, MD with 8 years experience. A self-made man who specializes in neo-traditional, portraiture, and realism. After a motorcycle accident left him unable to walk, he defied doctors and was back on his feet in less than three months. He and Erika Siuda both perceive each other's work to be subpar. Ink Master comes full circle now that both men are on the show and ready to prove themselves to the world.

Robbie Ripdoll - Owner/Artist at Chapel of Love Tattoo from Viera, FL with 18 years experience. Robbie started apprenticing at his father's tattoo shop at age 12, doing pro work long before graduating high school. His older brother Jayvo has been struggling to catch up to his success, drawing his ire from the competition for territory and their father's approval.
vs.
Jayvo Scott - Self-employed artist from Melbourne, FL with 13 years experience. Although always around his father's tattoo shop, he didn't start inking until he was 23 years old. After learning the ropes, he has become the owner of the family business, hoping to show up his younger, yet more experienced, brother. Their family feud has gotten physical in the past, but now they want to leave it all on the flesh. Which brother will come out on top?

JUDGES

Oliver Peck - Owner of Elm St. Tattoo and Original True Tattoo, with 20+ years experience and world records in tattooing. Blunt yet fair, he's always smiling. Or at least he could be, it's hard to tell with that facial hair.

Chris Nunez - Owner of HandCrafted Tattoo And Art Gallery, he doesn't like it when artists do the same ol', same ol', even if that's what he told them to do. He'll get in a literal fight with an artist over his critique, at least with a bunch crew members flanking him.

Dave Navarro - Founding member of Jane's Addiction, been getting tattoos forever. Actually provides some decent insight when Peck and Nunez can't agree. Expect him to stare at the camera and hurry people up soon after asking a question during the live finale.

*Episode Six
Skill: Technical Application
Flash Challenge: There was no flash challenge, and the judges instead went straight to the longest elimination tattoo yet.
Winner: N/A
Elimination Tattoo: Tattoo A Gluteus Maximus In 12 Hours
Best Tattoo: One side was done in six hours, then the artists were mixed again to complete another's piece on the other side. Julia, Erik def. Robbie, Mark def. Robbie, Jason def. Mark, Josh def. Jason, Aaron (who only tattooed once) def. Don, Cleen def. Don, Cris def. Angel, Ty'Esha def. Cleen and Erik chose Ty'Esha (who chose Erik,) Aaron and Cris chose Don (who then chose himself,) and Mark and Jason chose Julia (who chose Mark.)
Eliminated: Ty'Esha was chosen as the worst due to her heavy black shading, giving the skull a "mustache," and having it face the wrong way on the leg. There was no human canvas jury this week, making the judges responsible for the decisions.

Winner: Cleen and Mark
Elimination Tattoo: Portraits
Best Tattoo: Mark defeated Erik, Cleen defeated Jason, and neither Cris nor Aaron won their face-off.
Eliminated: Aaron, for differing detail in the eyes and mouth of his portrait, and a lack of precision that made it looked rushed. The judges voted 3-1 for him over Cris, who was voted as the worst by the human canvas jury.

Episode Highlights: http://www.spike.com/episodes/tay52d/ink-master-painstaking-portraits-season-5-ep-513

*Episode Fourteen
Skill: Creativity, Contrast, and Composition
Flash Challenge: There was no flash challenge, instead moving directly into the elimination tattoo, featuring
a panel of three guest judges: Mike Rubendall, Rose Hardy, and Nikko Hurtado.
Winner: N/A
Elimination Tattoo: Grim Reapers
Best Tattoo: The judges unanimously voted Jason the best. Mark and Cris were the bottom two and had to face-off to save themselves, both tattooing a stencil that Jason himself designed.
Eliminated: Cris, for having similar technical mistakes to Mark's, but failing to fight for his spot like Mark did. There was no human canvas jury this week.

Episode Highlights: http://www.spike.com/episodes/a5edh2/ink-master-firing-squad-season-5-ep-514

Winner: N/A
Elimination Tattoo: Random Styles and Subjects
Best Tattoo: Cleen's New School Tiger won him a spot in the finale, above Mark's American Traditional Skull & Snake, Erik's Black & Grey Rose & Dagger, and Jason's Japanese Pinup. Jason picked the lucky skull to determine the final elimination subject for the remaining three, and chose birds as the subject.
Eliminated: Mark, for patchy coloration compared to the others. Erik was the first to advance, and then Jason.

Episode Highlights: http://www.spike.com/episodes/ij6ogc/ink-master-fight-to-the-finale-season-5-ep-515

*Episode Sixteen: The Live Finale
America's Vote: Jason, who won $10,000, a trip to the Jack Daniels distillery, and a spot in the final two.
Eliminated: Erik, for not having a dynamic piece that fit the back well enough.
Winner and Ink Master: Jason, for hitting the new school challenge, compared to Cleen, who had great technical application as always, but struggled with the photo realism concept. In the live deliberation, Oliver chose Jason, Chris chose Cleen, and Dave ultimately chose Jason, feeling he met the challenge.

Some other notes:

Tonight at 9 before the premiere, Dave is hosting a one hour special called "You Choose Live" which features "some of the show's wildest fights, busted tattoos and epic eliminations." Apparently based on fan votes, he'll then do a one-on-one interview with either Tommy Helm or Kyle Dunbar.

Also tonight at 11 following the premiere, is the premiere of Tattoo Nightmares: Miami, featuring three new cover up artists, led by Clint Cummings from Ink Master Season 2.

And anybody wanting a preview of episode one: The artists face their worst nightmare when they're forced to tag team tattoo alongside their rival, and for the worst pair, one of them gets to get rid of their rival permanently.

she's the dumpy, frumpy 3 who they keep giving prefabricated, shade-throwing B-roll cutaways to, because A SEASON WITH STAKES THIS LOW NEEDS A VILLAIN RIGHT OUT OF THE GATE

That "You Choose" special was loving comedic in its narrowness of scope. The only lipservice Craig got (aside from the only footage of him at all being when he was eliminated) was a corner feedtweet of support from Kyle. This only further bolsters the notion producers did not hesitate to remove him for being "too boring" for a proper clownshow.

It's precisely the fact that Emily's doing an act that makes her annoying. Like the sister from Cruel Intentions ramped up ten fold, a comment for everything, etc. I have to wonder how far she'll actually go or if she'll truly be the villain of the season.

LT's going home sooner than later though. Edit: Man, you can't change your pin up and expect it to go over well.

I would be SO pissed to have ANY of the tattoos that we saw tonight. What the holy hell. I don't think I've ever seen the jury ever be so quick to have people jump in to say they have the worst tattoo.

I'm not a big "root for the ladies because yay girl power" but I do cut them a little slack being in a tough male dominated industry. That being said, Emily gives every female tattooer I have ever met a bad name. Have an edge, sure - be a complete and total bitch to EVERYONE?!? I couldn't even pick out a worst. LJ's was bad but at least it was small and not so noticeably lovely from a far distance. That pig-face hula girl was a travesty but then I saw the gorilla maid, which might have been worse. The alien looking new school one sucked bad too, and that one dude's looked like artwork from The Wall movie instead of a hot pinup girl. The majority of them wouldn't be out of place in those lovely tattoo threads that used to be in GBS.

I listened to this latest episode wearing headphones and the music really popped out as being intrusive and overdramatic. Is this deliberate? It was so omnipresent it seemed like the laugh track of a comedy series.

Some of the art is pretty bad but the attitudes are even worse - unprofessional and to me, immature. I mean taping probably only goes on for a few weeks and there's only going to be one winner so this "I'm not here to make friends" aspect seems like a terrible strategy. They have the opportunity to make friends in their chosen profession but instead amp up the tension and bad feelings, but in life you never know when having a friend or even a decent acquaintance in your industry could come in handy.

I listened to this latest episode wearing headphones and the music really popped out as being intrusive and overdramatic. Is this deliberate? It was so omnipresent it seemed like the laugh track of a comedy series.

I don't work in post so I can't really comment on the music, I would expect they use it to heighten the dramatic tension like most shows do.

Lol I was a producer on the show. I suck cause I can't really answer any questions but I will confirm Aaron and Mark are both awesome. Will also buck the trend and say that Emily owns.

The loft is big and fun and the boys sleep in one room and the girls in another.

I will also confirm the awesome comment.

I was a transcriptionist for the show, so I can't say much, except 'yes, this.'

EDIT: Also, Oliver Peck's critiques will never stop cracking me up on account of his own portfolio.

EDIT 2: Holy poo poo Emily's sneer could be its own character.

I thought you were dumbhand because the chances of two people who worked on the show in the same thread... Chatting with Aaron right now, he says hi and is shocked and amazed.

Three now. Hi thread, hi Ink Master. Maybe one day I'll watch you and see if even more than 2 minutes of all that footage I've run made it on air.

I said it in a PM, but since it's not really ~sensitive info~ I can happily repeat it: I cracked the gently caress up at his commentary, and had to correct so many ridiculous errors in that transcript solely because I was laughing so hard (which makes doing voice-to-text transcription difficult).

Judging by the way the season is going so far, I sincerely doubt the poo poo that had me all  is going to get used, but I'll still cross my fingers and hope at least some of it will be.

Also: Hi!

It's usually closer to 50 seconds, if that. I'd imagine it'll be more once they start eliminating people, since they've got, what? Twenty people in it right now? So, the first two episodes are basically none of what we worked on (except maybe the judge interview portions).

Very, unfortunately. I was honestly debating posting what I did, but it's vague enough to be all right.

Come to me .... and live forever.
So without revealing too much fellas (thanks for being here by the way,) are there any crazy, never-before-done challenges this time around?

I remember season 4 had a scroller about auditions for face tattoos.

Best any of us can say is the typically dickish 'watch and find out.' v:shobon:v
