Though it was released ages ago Naruto: Rise of a Ninja and it's sequel were basically the first part of the Naruto anime in game form so they had cutscenes and open world exploration to go along with the gameplay itself. I finally stopped paying attention when he had a freaking heart attack over the thought that he may have to kill an unrepentant bad guy (You know the one) I mean I didn't like the series up to that point but that was just the final "And I'm done." I pretty much only follow One Piece now, and I let it buffer so I can read it in arcs.

All the side quests are currently irrelevant things, the world map is both too big to make getting anywhere tedious and not big enough to matter. It's weird because most of these games, as far as I can recall? are just straight fighting games with cutscenes. None of this running about nonsense.

Instead they're just kind of poo poo, and occasionally they'll write a funny line, and the voice actors working for them are usually very good (though not necessarily in the roles given to them) but it just wont work. It's the Uncanny Dub.

I do not like Hinata... I mean I hate this entire series but Hinata especially rubs me the wrong way. I just happen to hate characters of her archetype and the fact is she plays it so bloody to a T that I just roll my eyes. I mean she's about a step removed from Orihime's "KUROSAKI-KUN" spam. And I just... I don't like characters like that.

So the final movie (I hope) aired in Australia. And It couldn't resist one more bit of being really dumb and killing whatever characterization the protagonists had before the series went batshit stupid. At least the game is fun when you're fighting eh?

I will say the downside to the "Kage's are basically acts of God" thing was that Naruto at the beginning had some pretty decent fights since it was mostly brawling with a few Jutsu. But to borrow a pro-wrestling term, basically as the series went on, psychology disappeared in favor of Spotfests. Just endlessly throwing high level jutsu at one another so the story of every fight pretty much became "The story of a man being told to believe it and then getting Rasengan'd in the face 20 times." They pretty much lost all substance and became big colourful explosions until you're thinking to yourself, "Is it sure it didn't mean Wizards instead of Ninja?" EDIT: and this is why Rock Lee and Might Guy are the best characters, their combat style is "Kick you in the face" and "Kick you in the face fancier and harder!"

Or in short, a whole bunch of interesting things for a setting if it wasn't supposed to be about Ninja's, and wasn't written by Kishimoto and starring every single useless poo poo he thought up. Though it does help (as you brought up they're Direct Attack Spells and such) give my favourite summation for Naruto (long before it went even further of the rails of insanity) and that it's more a series of wizards who know Kung-Fu rather than any actual ninja.

I got to the end of Sasuke's eternal stabbing in the back battle with his brother and just went "I am not reading this anymore" as that was up to date at the time. I had only read it because it felt weird saying "Naruto is complete poo poo" without having seen a lot of it. When I was done I could safely say, "Naruto is complete poo poo" and when something that happens past this game happens and our protagonist drops to the floor like he just had a heart attack I laughed and was glad I dropped this poo poo.
