Kill la kill was a fun show and I enjoyed it! the extra blue-ray episode though was some glittering garbage though except for how the school turns into a spider that was cool and also the giant scissors

Sometimes, in a city this dirty, you need a real hero.
Finished it. Would not recommend.

During the final episode, i was hoping for TTGL's foot to come down crushing them all like from Monty python.

They literally did the Monty Python thing in Panty and Stocking's last episode already

Well, I warned you, though I don't blame you for being mildly curious.
The chief reason why KLK wasn't my cup of tea is that I don't like when parody is used as an excuse to do exactly what is being parodied (loud speeches, over-the-top battles, dumb moral at the end, etc). KLK doesn't offer new ideas or a new perspective on things; in fact, it doesn't offer new anything.

It seemed to be more homage than parody. I'm pretty sure everyone involved creatively with the show just loved sleazy 70s/80s anime action OVAs and wanted to do one of their own

Kill La Kill is a lot of things but a parody is not one of them, despite how many people decided that was the only way they could defend it.

you can have elements of parody in a show without it being entirely a parody. It's not a binary concept

I am absolutely certain these were not parodies but just stuff Trigger really likes

Alright, that's fair, seems like I was swayed by initial reaction to the show in the original thread where people defended fanservice by stating it's all a parody. I never even finished that thread and decided to give KLK a shot many months later. My bad.

That doesn't excuse the show's shortcomings, though. No matter how I tried, I just couldn't enjoy characters, soundtrack (quite bland, in my opinion), lack of believable stakes, and fight scenes, though obviously crafted with love, didn't elicit any reaction from me. Bottom line is, I've seen this all before, this show couldn't offer me anything of substance. And I'm not exactly picky in that regard, either.

You're spoiled from stuff like Jojo's. KLK doesn't even scratch the surface of how derivative and bad 90% of the anime every season is.

I'm pretty sure the anime would've been near perfect if it had a bigger budget, and from what I've read they had to rush the show thanks to deadlines or whatever.

The scriptwriter for both TTGL and KLK, who google tells me is "Kazuki Nakashima," has a bad habit of replacing an ensemble of interesting, dynamic antagonists with cliche "final boss" characters + a bunch of faceless drones, in the second half of his shows. This is in addition to letting the pace fall to poo poo

e: He prides himself on being the biggest Ken Ishikawa fan in the industry so I can't hate him entirely, but I can still hate him

Both shows had a great first half, then immediately lost their momentum and didn't regain it until the finale. If anything KLK was slightly better about this, the fights in its second act were against actual characters instead of flying CGI triangles

No it was about 50% too long

Sakurazuka posted:

The whole rape bits were the only really terrible parts of the show IMO. I guess the fanservice/porn didn't bother me all that much, even with it being completely unironic. Compared to animes sexualizing 10 year olds, which is a whole lot more common than it should be, I just can't really bring myself to care about more or less adult characters showing titties everywhere.

I thought it was entertaining, but definitely not 'good'.

TTGL was a better show than KLK, but GL had the benefit of its halves being separate love letters to mecha anime. So even if there were weaker parts in the story in pacing, you at least knew what they were going for.

KLK's second half was a loving mess.
