Normally I don't make aesthetic criticisms in other peoples' homes, but that rug looks like a beaver exploded. If meat is murder, then that rug is at least a severe beating.
So what is Sam & Max all about?

They are vigilante private investigators who have named themselves the "Freelance Police." The games are cartoony, humorous and the voice acting is top notch. Originally they started out as a comic book series but in 1992 a graphic adventure game was produced by LucasArts. In 2002 LucasArts started to develop a sequel which was then cancelled in 2004 without any prior reasons. The decision to cancel the sequel lead to the head developers leaving LucasArts to form the company TellTale Games, taking the Sam & Max franchise with them. Three seasons of graphic adventure games were made before they decided to take their direction away from being a "mini-LucasArts."

Oh yes, Sam is a dog and Max is a Rabbit.

So what's this LP all about?

They'll be solo video commentary. While many adventure games are suited more towards screen shot LP's, I feel that Sam & Max offers a lot more in video format. The voice acting is top notch and there's a lot of slapstick action that just adds even more levels to the games.

I'll be starting out with the 1993 LucasArts release "Sam & Max Hit The Road" which plays similarly to other classic adventure games made by the company at the time. The TellTale seasons are your somewhat standard TellTale Tool controls, they are compromised of three seasons in episodic format.

Ah my favorite of the bunch. The new games, while managing some aspects of bringing the comic to the PC, was severely lacking in the writing and jokes department. It wasn't bad, but it honestly felt more like fanfiction of the original works rather than an extension.

The TellTale series are a major change, after thirteen years away, a vastly different team at the helm and a standardised engine they were never going to pull it off completely. But they're still humorous and fun to play, Steve Purcell was at the helm and the original voice actors reprised their roles which added extra charm.

It's been a fair few years since I played the first two seasons but I have fond memories of them, I haven't even touched the third season so that's going to be an interesting experience.

Well, some of the voice actors. Didn't one of them die, as I recall?

The third season, while it holds a lot of plot I wouldn't agree with, had some of the better humor. Some of it even manages to get up towards the level this game did, though this is still my favorite of the bunch by a wide margin. Whereas I might get a good laugh out of a few scenes in the new games, practically every scene in this one has me laughing (watching your LP, I'm surprised at how many old jokes I had forgotten and how many have me laughing out loud).

Another option might be to turn just the music volume down a bit so it covers both your voice and the game voices less. I'm pretty sure Lucasarts games always let you do that in the options menu.

^^^ Another another option could be auto-ducking, which automatically lowers the rest of the audio anytime your mike picks up your voice. Check your recording software to see if it has it.

I'm going to be looking forward to the new games. The only LP I saw of them here was awful. The LPer took one look at the incredibly tight Grim Fandango by Vexxation and thought they could get the same effect by uploading completely unedited footage of them sloooowly working their way through each screen, fumbling with puzzles and dialogue boxes, backtracking for missed items, all without any commentary. It didn't quite live up to the Grim Fandango LP. I couldn't get past the first video.

I've always wondered myself. I have this vague awareness it was a pop culture reference back when the game was being developed, but it came out when I was six, and most days I can barely remember lunch, never mind twenty years ago.

The credits only list seven people as voice actors for the game. Specifically in this order:

Bill Farmer as Sam
Nick Jameson as Max
Irwin Keyes as Bruno

Additional voices:

Marsha Clark
Denny Delk
Tony Pope
And Beth Wernick

Denny Delk has a long history of voice acting for LucasArt's and other video games, including a popular character from my previous LP. He is in fact the guy who performed the part of Murray in Monkey Island. He also voiced Hoagie as well as the purple and green tentacles in Day Of The Tentacle. But his voice is pretty deep and probably out of contention. IMDB only lists him with three characters in the game. I'm typing out as I search and editing after.

Bill Farmer voices Sam in this game as well as Flambe and a character as yet unseen. IMDB has a habit of only three character submissions in a title. Nick Jameson is Max, an unseen character and additional voices. Iwrin Keyes is listed as only being Bruno. Tony Pope is only listed as additional voices for the game.

I'll look into a more definitive answer, if I had to guess then it would be Nick Jameson making the Mole Man sound like Max with sinus problems. Without an initial search revealing specific answers the jury could still be out on Tony Pope. It's past midnight here, I'll poke around some more tomorrow.

OK, so, apparently from Earth to Jupiter is 588,000,000 klicks, and Jupiter has a diameter of ~140,000 klicks. If a piece of twine is approximately... 2 mm thick, just how big would a ball made out of 588,140,000 kilometer long piece of twine BE?

Well, if it were packed absolutely perfectly, it'd be a solid with a cross-section of (pi*r^2) and the distance as its third dimension. For ease of calculation, let's convert that 2mm to km now. It's .000002 km in diameter, so half that in radius. We have (pi*(.000001^2))*588140000 for its volume. If I didn't screw up my calculation, that's .18 cubic kilometers or so.

Volume of a sphere is (4/3)*pi*(r^3). Re-arrange that and it's (.18)*(3/4)*(1/pi) = r^3. Looks like a radius of... 350-ish meters.

If it's got a bit of "give" to it, it might take up, say, five times as much volume as it says it should so there's room for it to not be a single solid mass, it's up to 1 cubic km, and the radius is a shade over 600 meters.

All numbers aggressively rounded even with they shouldn't be, and little scratchwork done outside this, so please double-check my math.

Fun facts about the Mystery Vortex: If you don't look at the floating objects before entering the mirror, the dialogue is different, since Max didn't say anything about the magnets earlier. Something like his childlike naiveté being shattered. Also, the game features a built-in screen saver if you leave it sitting for a really long time. The Mystery Vortex is one of the places that has a unique animation for it, and I think it was my favorite. A couple neat little things I'd like to point out for this game:

GatorGolf: If you look in the upper left of the driving range, you can see a copy of the giant monkey head from the Monkey Island games.

Snuckies: There are four things that are different at each of the three locations. They are: the mascot, the color of the ice cream in the stain glass, the mini-game you can buy, and the look of the employee.

Mystery Vortex: As Nidoking pointed out, Max says something different if you go right to the mirror; the door colors are random every game you play so Shuv-Oohl is never behind the same door. I know because I remember him being behind a purple door once on the left side; I played this game way too much as a kid.

Thanks for the advice, I'm spanking this game far quicker than I expected too. My notes finished off with exploring as far as the right side of Conroy's House but I intended to show off Car Bomb any way. The other Snuckey's are planned for the next update. I totally forgot to look around in the Vortex room, a complete oversight on my part but I'll go back in the next update too. I'll try to show off the screensaver's in the update afterwards as well as the highway mini game.

Thank you again for pointing out some things I'm missing, I appreciate it. Thankfully this is one game where you can re-visit old places.

I got a fair bit done in the time I had planned. Three new locations were uncovered, two visited, two locations were cleared out of puzzles, new people were met and we've seen how good Max's teeth are.

There's a fair bit of extra footage at the end including some visual jokes that were missed, a visit of each Snuckies including the two other mini-games and the highway mini-game. Which ScummVM crapped out partway through and everything went to hell...
