The Demons Stir

On the roof of Hanashima building during late sunday night, 5 shadowy figures look over Kariya, planning.

“I see you’ve been working hard.”

“Well yeah, this mission is kind of important, right~? Anyways a fair number of False Hearts lieutenants in the area have been killed.”

“Good, they should hold a meeting today considering how their command structure functions. This building is likely to be where it’s held… Can you take care of the objective by yourself?”

“I can handle a skyscraper or two just fine. So long as the Orchard is empty when I do it.”

“Oh, don’t worry about that! Just don’t do anything crazy until we’re ready.”

“Very well, let us commence our new plan.”

12 Hours Later...

In the Branch Chief’s office, a small and a bit stifling affair that is tucked away in an unassuming section of the college campus. The new Branch Chief is finishing up a call with Mr. Kiritani, the director of the Japan UGN Branch. He had called right before Ex Machina was going to brief his two new agents, too.

“I wanted to warn you about something. It seems like there might be bigger threat headed your way than we thought, but we can’t spare any more manpower right now… Do you know anything about something called Solomon’s Key?”

Just outside Ex Machina’s office, the two new agents idle around, waiting to be called in. There’d probably be no harm in wandering around or talking a bit, even though they’ve both heard this branch chief has a bit of a short fuse…

How annoying.

It’s the week leading up to New Years on Sunday and you’re stuck in school. Jan and Josephine are just 2 of the 10 troublemakers stuck in class together taking make-up assignments because of the amount of times they’ve just skipped school. Ms. Hasegawa, a substitute teacher, was hired to fill in for some other teacher that called in “sick” for this particular assignment.

It wouldn’t be an issue for Hasegawa, except now it looks like her boss just texted her about a new job.

quote:

New Job.

Client is named Sofia Liu-Vostrokova.

Dig up some info, meet her in 30 minutes. Located at Central Park pickup location.

The look on your face when you received the text must have given something away, because Jan, probably one of the strangest students you’ve taught, is looking at you intently. It’s like she’s expecting something…

“Alright, I just called my driver. She’ll show you around some secure spots to gather info. Hell, if anyone there likes you enough you might get into a special meet later. So, do you have any solid proof of not being with the UGN? I don’t care much either way, but some of my contacts just might.”

"A grimoire of magic, erroneously attributed to the biblical King Solomon. Ra'id did not particularly care for the minutia of history, or at least the recitation thereof. He could build a machine to do it for him. He'd decided to perform the stereotypical Neumann exposition as a courtesy to the head of UGN Japan. The meaningless drivel would give him time to think and feel reassured that whatever matter he wished to discuss was in good hands. If some catastrophe was headed his way, he'd need as much information as he could muster before tackling it.

"More importantly, it is also the name bestowed upon a particularly potent catalyst for the Renegade Virus, recently unearthed by a UGN research crew led by my father. I presume this Key you wish to discuss is related to his findings?"

He'd gotten a nasty lesson in underestimating the abilities of the Renegade in apparent teenagers in Zurich, yeah, but still. It's a bit awkward to realize that any shadow wars that were happening between this UGN and this False Hearts were likely being fought with child soldiers. He straightens his tie and clears his throat.

"Hello, there," he murmurs, still looking at Eadan. "What's a girl like you doing in a place like this?" Best to hear it straight from the mouth of the babe, then.

Make-ups suck, Jan pouts. She's not that far behind, anyway. Only missing that report in literature. Oh yeah, and that history paper. And all that math homework...Just then, a student passes by, nearly knocking over her pile. She grabs it just in time. Huh. Sometimes, her prodigious strength can be a nuisance; such as now, when she pops a bolt from her desk, snatching up the nearly twenty kilos of homework. She blushes, "Excuse me," and sits back down to work. Or at least she tries to. She keeps getting distracted by the teacher, Ms. Hasegawa. Word around the school is that she's involved in something shady. Well, word is that everyone is involved in something shady if you listen to all the rumors, but people seem more sure about her. And that demands attention from the city's number one crimefighter, whose name strikes fear into the hearts of the wicked! Once she settles on a name, anyway.

She leans over her desk, staring intently at Ms. Hasegawa. What's she doing...Checking her phone, I think? Is that something baddies do? Maybe if it's one of those throwaway phones. She saw that on one of those crime shows that Mom doesn't let her watch. But she doesn't have any idea what her normal phone looks like so that's no help. Hmm...Plan B! Use my inherent hero's instinct to sense her criminal nature! "Hmm... Hmm..." She leans in further, attempting to ascertain the teacher's hidden, sinister side. And tumbles over, taking her desk with her. "Ow, ow, sorry, sorry..." She picks herself, the desk and all the fallen papers up and slumps back into the battered desk with a sigh.

"Hey, Jo. Jo. Hey, hey, Jojo," she pokes Josephine with a pencil. "What does a criminal look like? I need to know for reasons."

For the record, Jan regards Mitsue Hasegawa with Respect/Suspicion

Josephine's learnt a lot since she returned to the public school system. She's learnt that pool days in gym are really dull when you're the only one who's not allowed to swim. She's learnt that bandages do more to draw attention to your weird prosthetic super-limbs than hide them. She learnt that taking English for an easy A doesn't work when you suck at grammar. She learnt that skipping classes and getting away with skipping classes are very different things. And most of all, she learnt that making up classes sucks.

To be fair, making up classes would probably suck less if she was paying any attention at all to her work. But really, Josephine's a bit too busy counting the ceiling tiles to do much work. And also too busy feeling that last text Ms Hasegawa got weave through the air until it reached her cell phone. And too busy getting poked in the back of the neck by Jan. Seriously, she should probably answer her question before she gets a pencil embedded in her spine.

"Criminals don't have a look, Jan. Not if they want to keep being criminals." Josephine rolls her eyes and turns around to face the underclassman. "Your average gang member? Sure, they'd have a look, they got to look like they're in the gang. But your career criminals? They could look like anyone. You, me, Ms Hasegawa, anybody. That's why you got to keep an eye out."

Mitsue sighs at the message on her phone. "Really? Now?"

Stupid, cheap, tiny Kanto school equipment. With her back leaning against a chair and her feet on top of the teacher's desk, just the very act of pulling out her phone causes that delicate balance of herself to teeter ever so dangerously. This new boss works her like a packhorse. He does understand that she only works because of this school job, why would he jeopardize that-

A crash, as Smith-san falls over for some reason. Mitsue bolts upright to help her out... but it looks like she recovers on her own. Well, okay.

Great, now Mitsue 's on her feet. That throws out laziness as an excuse. Thanks, Smith-san. What to do now? Still two hours until this class blows over, and no one's going to substitute a substitute teacher. She needs to figure out how to get out of here gracefully. But she needs to grab some information on the contact first.

"Don't mind me." Mitsue says, walking over the corner nearest the door to make a call. She speaks in a low voice, though anyone who leans close enough could hear it.

"Koji. Yeah, Hasegawa. Listen, need ya to run a name for me. Sofia Liu-Vostrokova, Russian. Uh-huh, yeah I can wait."

A pause that seems to stretch for hours. She looks back to her students and assures them with a smile before Koji gets on again.

"I'm here. Uh-huh. Uh-huh. UGN, huh." Mitsue briefly checks the phonescreen for a moment. "Oh wow, why'd they pay that much for a pretty face like- yeah, that's all I need to know. You've been great, thanks."

She hangs up. Okay, so the boss wants Mitsue to drive around some former UGN chief with an anonymous bounty on her head. That is really odd. And yet, completely fascinating. Well, shouldn't be late for the boss, then.

Now, let's go back to how she's going to pull out of this room in thirty minutes...

Josephine tries to not stick her nose into every cell phone call she sees. Too many calls to look at, too much chaff to sort through on the calls she does look at, it's just not a good use of her time. But sticking her nose into a phone call someone makes after getting a text, when it's something important enough for a teacher to make a phone call in the middle of class? That is worth doing. Even if she has to take her mind off of her conversation with Jan to do it, but it's not like she's not going to be watching what the teacher's doing too.

Okay, so she's asking about someone. Maybe the person who sent her the text? And the line's going silent... And staying silent... And Ms Hasegawa is probably going to notice her staring at this point... Wait, wait, he's back. And he's...

Oh. Oh. This is UGN business. That sure is a thing that's happening. Well, if Ms Hasegawa didn't notice the staring, she sure as hell is going to notice the way all the blood drained from Josephine's face.

"Oh, uh, yeah Jan. My sources are saying the same thing." She runs her fingers through her hair, metal just barely scraping her scalp. Josephine would love it if she could keep Jan out of this. She's too young to get involved in bad business like this. But let's be honest here, there's no force in the universe that could stop Jan from following her if she tried following Ms Hasegawa. Her mind settled, Josephine stands up.

"They're also saying we need to go now if we want to know what she's doing. Grab your coat and let's go. The rest of you! If anyone asks, we're in the bathroom. Got it?" Josephine looks the other students in the eye as she quietly backs into the hall...

She tries to take a peek at Luca's files, but he flips through them too quickly for her to get anything useful out of it. A pity. She follows him in through the door, tapping at the frame as she does so. "Knock knock, sir. Reporting as ordered!"

"Something about the branch chief being a purebreed expressing crossbreed powers due to stress," Luca summarizes for the young woman. "She probably thinks getting him some yoga or aromatherapy will reverse this--and don't open the door dammit you can hear this, can't you, Mr...Belcry?"

Was he seriously going to be taking orders from a barely pubescent teenager with black eyes? He swallows and grimaces instinctively--Ra'id reminds him too much of that bastard kid...

"Enter." His lucubrations finished, Ra'id was not seated behind his desk, his hands clasped in front of him as he surveyed the two agents. "Cleena. Finding Truths." He said, for an introduction, before cutting straight to the point. "I assume you have perused the current events file? What do you think of our present assignment?"

"Current events?" Cleena goes wide-eyed at the mention. "I don't remember ever getting that." She gives the two a nervous laugh and a halfhearted smile. Of course she had read the report, but playing dumb was half the fun of her job. "I've, uh... Only heard about our assignment. I wouldn't think that tracking someone down would be particularly difficult, especially if they like to act in the open. Right?"

"Not normally. In the case of someone with a powerful Warding mutation, however, our hunt may prove slightly more difficult than normal. I have reasons to believe our target is capable of targeted time dilation, and thus, able to walk through the world of men like a ghost." Raising his hands to cover his mouth, Ra'id gave his agents a few seconds to process the information. "Allow me to ask you this: How do you catch an assassin who has time on his side, and cannot be seen nor heard nor otherwise noticed? How would you strip his advantages away?"

"We've been informed," Luca notes in a businesslike tone right back. Having fifteen years plus on your organizational "senior" feels weird, Renegade or no. "As to this thief--" Assassination didn't sound quite right, theft was something he was much more familiar with, "--time dilation or no, they have to leave some trace of their passing. Physical evidence. Remote electronic analysis." He shrugs. "That's how you'd detect them, anyway. Ideally we'd do our homework and set up something that they must attempt, arrange the inevitable meeting on our own terms. Perhaps we could raise rumors that this Key that they have taken is only part of a whole, and leave a decoy as bait."

This was sounding a bit closer to home. Sort of. Time fuckery isn't exactly on the classic thieves' tools list.

Luca's words elicited a sigh from the city chief. "Agents. While I appreciate your enthusiasm for information gathering, it is considered somewhat impolite to eavesdrop on another's conversations, particularly your city administrator. I must remember to install anti-Renegade measures into this office." He didn't sound particularly angry, just...tired. As though he'd gone through this routine several times before. "You have given yourselves a course to follow, however. That is most appreciated. Finding Truths, these victims have a pattern. Find it. Cleena, collate the data from the criminal families' calls and emails and look for any suspicious information. Any questions, agents?" His alien eyes did not blink as he stared at them, waiting.

Cleena nods. "I have no questions!" She turns to leave, but performs an abrupt about-face as she realizes that she did, in fact, have questions. "Wait, what criminal families? Criminal families, or the criminal's family? If we know about their family, how do we not know who it is already? Where am I going, exactly?"

"Finding patterns is what I'm good at," Luca responds with a mild shrug, "as is listening for information. Of course, it'd help if I had a list of these victims..."

"The criminal families of the city, and to the building's fourth floor, fifth door from the elevator. You will find all the tools and material you need to perform your duties there." Ra'id had turned his attention to the folder Luca had brought in. He didn't raise his eyes to answer 'Rori''s questions. Routine office work only demanded minute amounts of attention, and he was sure she'd manage. She was sharp enough to know that there was always something wrong with the UGN, after all. Some mundane work would not kill her.
