I saw they recently repressed all of The Beatles' albums in mono for some reason and they're horrendously expensive, is there some appeal to mono that I don't get aside from the nostalgia value?

Yeah, with old music unless it's a special new remix version (which does exist for some of the Beatles stuff, mainly the Yellow Submarine Songbook) mono is usually the way to go, as stereo was more of a novelty and not the standard for the first several years of it's existence. They were throw away extra versions, while the mono was the real mix.

I read somewhere that the Squirrel Nut Zippers record their studio albums with a single mic that is above and front center of the band. (Because that's how the music they play was originally recorded back in the 30's.)

The new stereo remasters of the mono albums that came out a couple years ago suck, and you can tell they tried too hard separating the channels, I guess so you felt like you got your money's worth for both ears, durr, it's poo poo.
