oleo is a butter substitute; olio is a mixture or melange. the crossword puzzle where I live has repeats as well: alar (having wings) erose (ridged, like a leaf) oona (charlie chaplin's wife) ana (a kind of cuckoo bird) ama (a mideastern nurse) ern (a variation of erne) and plenty of directional answers The editor also likes to use clues that are extremely obscure words, and have half-finished latin phrases that I've never heard of.
