Quantum of Solace (directed by Marc Forster, EON Productions, 2008)

reviewed by Siglo

(monkeysmashesheaven.wordpress.com)

Much has been said about the latest James Bond character (Daniel Craig). The new Bond in the latest series is darker and more morally ambiguous than his predecessors. In the first film of the new series, Casino Royale (Martin Campell, 2006), Bond’s handler, M ,bemoans the fact that Bond’s excesses made a splash in the mainstream media. Reminiscing about past days when such agents would have defected, M says, “Christ, I miss the Cold War.” According to the latest Bond films, conflicts in the post-Cold War era are more complex. Enemies are less clearly defined. Allies and enemies are blur. The new James Bond of Quantum of Solace (Marc Forster, 2008) is a part of this gray world.

In the previous Bond film, Casino Royale, Bond’s lover was killed. In Quantum of Solace, Bond follows clues to Haiti to find the super-secret organization, the Quantum Group, responsible for the killing of his lover. This mercenary company has a history of intrigue. They previously overthrew a populist president who raised the minimum wage for Haitians. The populist president had angered corporate and imperialist interests. Now the Quantum Group is aiding a group of CIA-backed, right-wing generals from Bolivia to stage a coup against a populist president in Bolivia. In addition, the United States is supporting the coup to advance its control over the region’s oil resources. The Quantum Group, masquerading as an environmental organization, is buying up supposedly useless land in order to secretly take over the Bolivia’s water supply. The plot touches on current events. It alludes to the U.S. overthrow of Aristide, the conflicts with Evo Morales, and the conflicts over water resources.

In Quantum of Solace, love and revenge push Bond into serving the interests of the Third World. Because his lover from the previous film, Casino Royale, is killed, Bond finds himself on the correct side of the principal contradiction. Bond finds himself on the side of the oppressed nations against imperialism. However, Bond is merely an accidental friend to the international proletariat. He is loyal to Queen and country. His motives are personal: love and revenge. Bond’s personal motives lead him temporarily against the interests of the British and Amerikan states; they lead him to temporarily align with the interests of the international proletariat. Bond’s antagonist, the shadowy Quantum group has no ideological ties either; they serve whomever pays best, admitting they would serve leftists if the money was there.

Typically, the movie ends with large explosions. Bond saves the day. In the real world, there are no super agents that will sacrifice their interests for the oppressed of the world. The masses are the true heroes and makers of history. Justice will come from the masses themselves. The masses certainly didn’t have Bond in Cochabamba when Bolivians fought against water privatization. Like most Hollywood movies, the Bond films are expressions of the Western individualism.

IDK what any of this means but this seems like it'd be up your alley

In The Dark Knight (Christopher Nolan, 2008) Batman is played by Christian Bale. Christopher Noland’s re-imagining of the DC comic book is darker in tone, more realist and less romantic than the previous Batman film series whose style was set by Tim Burton. Like previous depictions, Batman is the alter ego of Bruce Wayne, the billionaire head of Wayne Enterprises. In The Dark Knight, Batman uses top-secret military gear designed by Wayne Enterprises to wage a personal war against crime in Gotham. Batman’s suit is top-secret body armor. The Batmobile is a top-secret military tank. By giving this background information, this version of Batman attempts to fill the holes in the plot of the traditional Batman story. This information gives the story more of an edge of realism than the previous film series, which left Batman’s hightech gadgetry, more or less, a mystery.

Critics have commented that Batman is a dark, romantic rebel figure. However, in this re-imagining, The Dark Knight’s character draws less on gothic or romantic literature than the incarnations from the Tim Burton series. The brooding Bruce Wayne hardly exists in this Batman depiction. Rather than a comic book Hamlet, Batman is portrayed as a single-minded super pig. He is mostly one dimensional, except for his slight concern over a lost girlfriend. This Batman draws on the post-911 anti-terrorism genre and the rogue cop and vigilante genres of the 1970s and 1980s. Like Jack Bauer of 24, Batman is not afraid to torture to get what he needs. In this re-imagining, Batman throws a criminal off a building, crippling him, in order to elicit information. Batman is a “rebel” in the same vein as Dirty Harry or Paul Kersey from Death Wish. He’s the “rebel” hero of fascists, fighting the war on terror — no holds barred. Batman is at war with crime and the system; he is out to clean up Gotham, even if it means breaking the rules. The Dark Knight appeals to the same kind of people who love the Bernard Goetzs of the world and “system bucking cops” like Rudy Giuliani, Joe Arpio, and Tom Ridge. Batman is an allegory for the extra-legal fascist policies of the war on terror and the war against crime.

The Joker (Heath Ledger), in opposition to super pig, is a monkey wrench in the gears of capital. He even describes himself as an “agent of chaos.” The Joker sets up a series of “social experiments” designed to undermine the hope of the “masses” of Gotham. One of which, turns Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart), a “true hero,” Gotham’s golden boy, the crusading attourney into the disfigured and revenge crazed Two Face, who kills several people in a rampage while seeking out corruption within the police department. In order to keep Harvey Dent as the hero of Gotham, “so the masses don’t lose hope,” Batman takes credit for the murders perpetrated by Two Face. Hence, Batman goes on the lamb forever, accepting his status as an outlaw. Even though the Joker destabilizes Gotham, the Joker is by no means a revolutionary. The Joker is mostly a nihilist who is described as wanting to simply “burn the earth.” Criminals like the Joker do not represent true opposition to capitalism-imperialism. The Jokers of the world will never destroy the system. Only communist revolution will destroy Batman and the system he represents once and for all.
