His whole character was "guy that is comically poor" Thats why they had improvements like the van driving to schools to get kids with candy.

Or Penny and Lennard getting engaged? Or Raj being able to talk to woman, having a girl friend? Or Howard getting married? Penny getting ditching her waitress/actress career to become a pharma rep?
