The Last Temptation od Christ is best by far. Mean Streets and The Age of Innocence are worth a mention together with the most popular options in this thread. However, PTA is a better director, he has at least two more creative decades ahead of him and I am so stoked for Inherent Vice.

I liked Departed the most even if it is a remake of a better film in many ways (internal affairs).

It has a tighter story and is more epic. Departed is grittier and more all over the place. Maybe better isnt the word. Different isnt the word either though. Departed looks like the ripoff after youve seen both, thats all. Even if it is creative in its own way.

I get that goodfellas is a classic and everything but casino was Scorsese improving on that and making a better and more entertaining movie overall

Goodfellas has Jimmy Two-times (I'm gonna go get the papers, get the papers), delicious meals made in prison in which the mob boss cuts garlic with a razor, and the scene where Joe Pesci and his mom discuss why that painting with the old man and his two dogs is so great. My mind goes blank when I try to think of classic Casino scenes.

That's nothing compared to when Joe Pesci shoots Christopher Moltisanti in the foot and then gets all mad at him for being in pain.

I also love and often unintentionally and unironically quote Robert DeNiro's response to Tommy killing Spider when I'm in situations where it's warranted: "What the gently caress are you doing? Are you a loving sick maniac?!"

Alright let me do this the right way

1. Raging Bull
2. Taxi Driver
3. Goodfellas
4. Mean Streets
5. After Hours

(though I haven't seen Wolf on Wall street)

Joe Pesci verbally tearing De Niro a new rear end in a top hat in the desert

the thing about Casino is it's not really that similar to Goodfellas. Goodfellas is way more grounded, and we have an audience identification character who came up from being a regular nobody. Casino is entirely comprised of rich assholes from start to finish, and plays out like a sleazy, hilarious melodrama (I laugh during De Niro flying through the air in the opening credits every time, it's loving hysterical) that's way flashier and excessive.

Whether or not you think so, The Departed was really good and Alec Baldwin loving kills it in that movie as evidenced:

I'd put Taxi Driver above Raging Bull (and put The Wolf of Wall Street above After Hours), but other than that, the list seems about right.

I would agree if he was acting like that in only the one scene, but the character he plays is consistent with that attitude throughout the whole movie. It's like the way Pesci played a complete lunatic from start to end in Goodfellas, not just the "Am I a clown scene" that people most people bring up ad nauseum.

and oh man, the long scene near the beginning where De Niro narrates just exactly how the casino works and how the skim works and so on for like ten minutes is so loving good, the best ever basically. gently caress, Casino really owns

I'd pick goodfellas over taxi driver and then raging bull third. All three are great and I wouldn't fault anyone for picking any of the three first.

The ones I've seen in order:

Goodfellas
Gangs of New York
Taxi Driver
Casino
Wolf of Wall Street
King of Comedy
The Departed
The Aviator
After Hours

Goodfellas is more entertaining than The Godfather. If I want art, I'd watch Godfather. If I want to see an action mob movie, well...

Daniel Day Lewis' Butcher in Gangs of New York was a really fun character. Oh and it features a guy swinging around a Shillelagh.

King of Comedy is good if only to remember that Sandra Bernhard was a real person.

Taxi Driver was good but not the unbelievable movie I'd been led to expect.

A vet with a twisted moral compass who manages to escape after attempting a political assassination and becomes a hero after killing a pimp instead.

I mean the movie isn't terrible but Bickle just doesn't sell me. I almost enjoy Pupkin more as a character, but King of Comedy does sort of fall apart as it goes on.

Medium Cool posted:

I didn't know this and I've seen both. After Hours is ok but if Hackett is supposed to be a guy who's just 'down on his luck' it doesn't really work out. Guy steals a cab ride and then goes through a girl's poo poo, sneaking out when he sees her burn medication. Guy's a jerk.

Taxi Driver has a weird ending but the mood is so strange throughout the entire movie that I actually don't mind. Also I think it has the best actor performance of all time by De Niro.
