i feel like i have been noticing this the past few years. more people are saying "i'm waiting on line at the store" despite the fact that "in line" is both grammatically correct and makes more sense anyway. is this another reason to hate millenials or has it been around?

Internet, OP. Millenials can only speak intelligably in the context of internet ("on line") culture. It's the same reason why you increasingly hear phrases like "I just downloaded a new sweater from Target" and "Mom, the kids at school have been cyber bullying me in real life."
