You can do that in the normal game. Don't want to fight on the terrible comet :argh:? Go do randoms for a month!

I don't know, I loved the missions on the terrible comet :argh:. I was using a Crab (I think, at least, this was a while ago), so being in space on a giant icecube just meant everyone got a face full of lasers. It also has pretty impressive mission design for the time, considering pretty much every other mission in MW2 was "destroy this object," "don't let this get destroyed," or "run!" Sure, that's still the objective, but what you had to shoot/protect was more interesting then some building.

Are we getting a rundown on the available mechs and/or are you buying a new one anytime soon?

Well, for a super-short summary of the stuff we've seen so far:

CommandoMetal Baby: A light 'Mech used primarily by House Steiner. The stock design has a bunch of SRMs and a medium laser, and is known mostly for being a slow, easy target full of delicious ammo. It can put some hurt on other light 'Mechs, but it does poorly against anything heavier. The custom variant with a bunch of Medium lasers is a good safe choice in every Mechwarrior game, and can do some decent damage as long as you watch your heat.

Jenner: A light 'Mech used primarily by House Kurita. Fast, with jump jets, 4 Medium Lasers, and an SRM4 for fun. As PTN has said, though, it suffers from having literally the worst-located cockpit in the game. It's pretty much right at eye level for other lights, and taller machines can just shoot straight down. It's a shame, because it would otherwise be an excellent 'Mech.

Panther: Another Kurita light 'Mech. Unlike most light 'Mechs, however, the Panther is very slow. Instead of a bunch of short range weapons, it has an arm-mounted PPC that can hit at long range... theoretically. The slow projectile speed makes that somewhat difficult, but it does serious damage if it hits. It also has some backup SRMs for extra firepower at short range. A good grunt unit, but I'd suggest against piloting one yourself.

The Crab and Sentinel used by your allies in these missions are both Medium 'Mechs, but they can be talked about once PTN gets a chance to fight/pilot one.

If it wasn't for the spoilered part, I'd go with the Crab. But because we'll see a Crab later, it's time for 1, Zeus Time.

From what I can see mechwarrior 4 and it's expansions seem to get a lot of dislike, why is that? (I have only played the mercenaries standalone for 4.)

I felt like writing an essay so I'm sorry in advance:

MechWarrior 4 had two problems, one of which wasn't the fault of the game designers. The game itself took several steps back from Mechwarrior 3, sure, but it also was released right as FASA (the company who created Battletech) started to collapse and fans were worried about the future of Battletech.

The game came out in Novemeber of 2000, and it was a rough time to be a Battletech fan. There were rumors that FASA was going to go out of business, rumors that turned out to be true in 2001. The Battletech IP got sold off to WizKids, a move that didn't inspire much confidence. Not only did they announce a new tabletop game, it was a collectable mini game, and as a bonus it also skipped ahead fifty years in the story in order to distance itself from the original timeline. Mechwarrior: Dark Age (later Age of Destruction) was pretty much everything Battletech fans hated combined into one game, even if it was objectively a decent game.

Soon after MechWarrior 4 was released, info started to come out about MechAssault, which was an arcade game that just happened to have robots in it, not a new mecha sim. MechAssualt turned out to be a good game as well, but it's very different then the MechWarrior games. A lot of people (correctly) expected that there wouldn't be another new MechWarrior game, and thus MW4 was viewed as the last gasp of the franchise. These factors combined to make a lot of people think that the original Battletech was dead and its body was being looted by WizKids and Microsoft while they had the chance. While Battletech ended up fine in the long run, it helps to have this in mind when thinking about people's reactions to MechWarrior 4.

In several ways, MechWarrior 4 isn't as good as the previous games in the series. The story for Vengeance and Black Knight are both, to put it bluntly, kind of crap. MW3's story was pretty good for the time, even if it was simple and told entirely thru voice over. MW4's storyline, on the other hand, was kind of dumb, had a silly "choice" that just changed the final cutscenes, and in general was presented poorly. There were also a lot of things that were seemingly designed to piss off grognards, like the fact that Clan 'Mechs were everywhere instead of being rare and expensive. The developers also created several new 'Mechs instead of adding a bunch of fan favorites. While some of them are pretty neat designs, they were also unnecessary.

The core gameplay itself is also sort of worse then the previous games. MW3 featured cool stuff like independent arm movement, a well-created world with cosmetic terrain damage, and neat damage effects on damaged 'Mechs. MW4 featured fixed crosshairs, a world that felt sparse and devoid of life, and a damage effect that looked like someone sprayed the 'Mech with black spraypaint. Weapon balance was all over the place initially, with Clan tech still being clearly superior. There were several questionable design decisions as well, like the option to fight at night (it seemingly had no effect on the AI), the fact that poptarting (jumping up and down behind cover) was far and away the best tactic, or that it took at least two hits to kill someone, even with a headshot.

All that said, MW4 was still a pretty great game that suffered from being released to a hostile community. And, people played the poo poo out of the game even if they like to complain. There were also several good things in the game, so it's not all negative. The changes to the construction system tried to make people take a variety of weapons, and it was somewhat successful. Also, it had extremely good multiplayer, especially compared to the laggy nightmare that was Mechwarrior 3. MW4: Mercs is probably the best all-around Mechwarrior game to play now, because it's an excellent game on its own merits, but also because MW2 is very primitive and trying to get MW3 running on a modern system is basically impossible.

So, Mechwarrior 4: it's a good game, it's just not as good as 2 and 3.

Also no cockpits in MW4, making piloting everything more samey and less immersive.

This actually was a big deal to me, because I loved how good MW3 did with the cockpit stuff. You actually had a full 3D cockpit, complete with the view being blocked by random crap and poor visibility due to badly-designed windows. There were also neat effects if you got hit in the head, like the UI messing up and the windows cracking and being punctured by weapon fire.

It just contributed to MW4 feeling more video game-y then the sim sorta feel MW3 had going on.

Then they will find out about Mechwarrior Online, see the giant mess that PGI has made out of the game, and then start looking into Heavy Gear or Earthsiege.

Since forever. The entire document is worthless, though, so no one follows it.

Everyone does, however, generally follow the same basic rules of warfare. "Don't shoot up a bunch of civilians by accident" is generally a good thing to follow, because dead people don't pay taxes to the military. Plus, unrestricted warfare just leads to everyone nuking each other, which is why everything went bad in the first place.

Either way, urban combat is a really bad idea for 'Mechs in the same way it's bad for modern tanks. Getting funneled into a narrow area like in the middle of a city leads to ambushes by infantry, minefields/IEDs/other traps, or surprise attacks from gently caress-off units like SRM Carriers or the various AC/20 tanks.

To connect this back to MW2, just look at the turrets that were a few missions back. They aren't a threat if you can just snipe them from max range with PPCs, but up close they can take off some armor pretty quickly. Being in a city makes it harder to snipe them, after all.

A good example of that is the fact that there is an entire social class that consists entirely of trained pilots without 'Mechs. The Dispossessed are all people who got shot out of their 'Mechs, or had their 'Mechs stolen, or just ran out of money and had to sell their 'Mech.

A Mechwarrior is a knight whose armor and weapons are a giant robot; the Dispossessed are desperate people trying to get back into their previous social standing by any means necessary.
