Here's a not-so-brief outline for my character's backstory:
- Eduardo Abascal was born in Spain in 1493. He trained as a carpenter, but always yearned for greater glory and adventure, and in 1511 he emigrated to Cuba. There, he joined the local army, and fought in the wars to "pacify" the island's indigenous inhabitants, and when that was done, again set shop as a carpenter. Later, in 1518, when Cortes began recruiting people for an expedition to the mainland, Eduardo eagerly joined up.
- Eduardo traveled with Cortes's expedition as they traveled inland, crushing any native resistance they encountered and making allies with several indigenous cultures who had been subjugated by the Aztecs, including the Mixtec, Tabascans, and Tlaxcaltec. When they reached Tenochtitlan, Cortes placed Moctezuma under house arrest for several months while he tried to negotiate terms of surrender. However, the Aztecs grew increasingly discontent with the situation and in July, in what would later become known as the Noche Triste, they rose up and drove the Spanish from Tenochtitlan. While trying to flee the city, Eduardo was knocked off his horse and then mortally wounded by Aztec warriors. However, before the warriors could deliver a killing blow, a man suddenly appeared and chased them off simply by glancing at them. He then took Eduardo to a safe spot on the shores of Lake Texcoco, with everyone involved in the battle strangely ignoring their presence.
- Eduardo's savior was Tlanextli, a Tlaxcaltec Nosferatu elder, who swiftly Embraced Eduardo. Tlanextli had been watching the progress of the Conquistadors for some time, and now wished to take a stronger hand in the events. Communication between the two was difficult since neither knew the other's language. Fortunately, when the Tlaxcaltec had allied with the Spanish 9 months ago, Tlanextli had sent one of his ghouls to learn as much as he could about the Spanish, which by this point included a limited amount of their language, just enough to act as a somewhat clumsy interpreter. Tlanextli taught Eduardo how to be a vampire, and in turn Eduardo told him what he knew about the "old world." Now understanding that many more European conquerors would surely follow even if Cortes failed, Tlanextli decided that the best course of action was to support the Conquistadors and their native allies in order to improve his own position.
- Eduardo was initially horrified and shocked about what had happened to him. His worldview had nothing to prepare him for this situation, and he wondered what would become of his soul. In addition, the Nosferatu clan bane manifested in the form of his wounds becoming permanent and ugly scars all over his body, along with a general air of tension that unsettled any mortal he attempted to talk to. However, he soon learned there were upsides as well. His new condition gave him much greater power than he had as a mortal, and he saw through Tlanextli's example that what he started out with was only a fraction of the power he could potentially obtain. Eduardo, Tlanextli, and several other indigenous Kindred allies joined the conquistadors as they cut a swath through the Aztec Empire, planning to cut off Tenochtitlan from its vassals and trading partners. Blood was easy to come by as they slayed and captured hundreds or thousands of Aztec warriors at a time.
- From May to August 1521, the Conquistadors and their allies laid siege to Tenochtitlan. Eventually, they advanced into the city itself. Eduardo, Tlanextli, and their compatriots soon followed. Many Kindred rivals of Tlanextli had lived in Tenochtitlan for a long time, and he and his allies were eager to settle some scores. In the previous months, the city had been devastated by a smallpox epidemic and the effects of the siege. While these did not affect the vampires directly, they resulted in the death of many of their ghouls and thralls, and in a significant reduction of their food supply. This made them vulnerable, and Tlanextli exploited this opportunity to his full advantage to slay many of them. At one point, Eduardo helped subdue a Gangrel vampire and, in imitation of what he had seen his native allies do to other fallen Kindred, diablerized him, gaining the power to change his shape in the process.
- After the conquest, Tlanextli and the other native Kindred elders divided the former property of the Aztec Kindred between them, with Eduardo staying with his Sire in Texcoco. European Kindred soon started to arrive on the mainland. Especially common among them were Sanctified, who hoped to convert the native Kindred just as mortal missionaries were doing to the mortal Indians. Eager for a way to reconcile his new situation with his Catholic faith, Eduardo joined the Covenant. However, the local Sanctified leaders distrusted him from the beginning. They were none-too-pleased to find an upstart Spaniard vampire already in a position of power before they arrived, and since they shared common mortal Spaniard ideas about purity of blood and distrust of Conversos, wondered whether his faith was truly genuine, or he was simply pretending to join up to serve his "heathen" Sire. Nevertheless, Eduardo was able to secure a sizable territory in New Spain over the next 78 years, primarily working as an enforcer for his Sire.
- In 1599, Tlanextli developed the Elder's Thirst and elected to go into Torpor, trusting Eduardo to watch over his estate during his long sleep. However, someone - Eduardo is almost certain that it was one of his rival Sanctified, though he is not sure which - took this opportunity to attack. A mob of mortals, led by some ghouls, attacked their Haven during the day and put Tlanextli to the Final Death. Eduardo tried to flee as best he could, but ended up getting trapped in Torpor. [note: I'm not sure about the exact circumstances of this, but I'm thinking that the result is that he ended up earth-melding in a situation where he couldn't safely get out again, probably because his resting place was burried under rubble or something. This isn't really important to the story, though.]
- Eduardo slept for a long time, nearly a century. The Torpor was harsh, and he lost not only his Blood Potency but also some of his skill at using his supernatural abilities. The Fog of Ages also took a toll on his memories, and as a result he could not remember enough detail to figure out who, exactly, had betrayed him and his Sire. Finally in [a short time before the game's starting date], he awoke and was able to escape. [note: If we're going with the trapped under rubble scenario, I'm thinking the stuff above him was cleared due to construction or something; again, not really important to the story] After feeding and getting his bearings, Eduardo was horrified to learn just how long he had been asleep. His supernatural power was greatly diminished, his material power was entirely gone, his Sire was no more, and he could not trust any Kindred currently in power. For the next several months, he kept on the margins even of Kindred society. Eventually, he met some vampire pirates in Veracruz and was introduced to Captain Shark. He offered the captain his skills as a warrior, as well as his long-unused skills as a carpenter, and in return was given a new home and a new army to join. Now that he has secured his physical safety, Eduardo hopes to eventually build up power of his own and, when the time is right, return to New Spain and exact a terrible vengeance on the Kindred who took everything away from him.
I'll post a preliminary character sheet later, when I'm done with it.
