Sarcasm is often hard to detect in written word. Often lots of internet arguments or text messages fly off into large arguments due to a lack of recognition of sarcasm. I propose that we made ~ the official punctuation of sarcasm to help clear up confusion. Ex: Wow, you are really good at making posts on Something Awful Dot Com~ ^In this example we can see a statement that is clearly sarcastic. Without the ~ to denote sarcasm it looks like a genuine compliment. However in reality you are actually really bad at making posts on Something Awful Dot Com. Thoughts?

This kind of went out of style but back in the early days of online multiplayer, the asisan players would put "la~" at the end of every sentence.

Whirlwind Jones posted:The interrobang. Wikipedia posted:The interrobang, also known as the interabang,[1] /ɪnˈtɛrəbęŋ/, ‽ (often represented by ?! or !?), is a nonstandard punctuation mark used in various written languages and intended to combine the functions of the question mark (also called the "interrogative point")[2] and the exclamation mark or exclamation point (known in printers' and programmers' jargon as the "bang").[3] The glyph is a superimposition of these two marks. You're 100% correct~

sarcasm marks don't work because the idea is fundamentally flawed. the humour of sarcasm is a contextual conflict, essentially creating an in-joke with your audience who must share that context (which must be poe-negative, natch). if you want to indicate sarcasm in the written medium with a potentially uninitiated stranger and have them understand and appreciate your sarcasm you must first import your context. for example, in the thread jokin about the xbone, you could write 'xbone has so many great exclusives' and yeah obviously you're being sarcastic. in another thread though, if you want it to land, you can just prepend your post with a chart or a short bit of factual text indicating that the xbone does not have great exclusives. an example from the other side: quote:yeah my girlfriend is real hot vs quote:
using a sarcasm mark to denote sarcasm is actually irony. ~hope this helps~
