EugeneJ posted:Individual - the family plans are hosed Well, there you go then! Group death is costing me more than real insurance was a year ago. Obviously the system is working. I love having to haggle with my doctor for prescriptions because they can't profit as much from my insurance anymore!

HEY VAPER posted:You can remove your own teeth with pliers! Something something about poor people having refridgerators. well no because you end up paying like what, ~$50-$100/mo and then you're still out of pocket the first $500 or so. And it only covers (most of the time) half the cost of major procedures, 75% the cost of fillings and crowns and poo poo, and 100% the cost of check ups (lol the $50 check up). So how is it cost effective? Nix it entirely and just pay out of pocket. They usually give you a good discount if you don't have insurance. If you take care of your teeth you'll be paying a lot less. I had all my wisdom teeth + another bad tooth pulled for $1900 which was expensive but it's not like insurance would have saved me any money really. And I had to option of going to Mexico and doing it for half that but that seemed like too much of a hassle. But it's not particularly sketchy, there's whole towns set up around US doctors going down and practicing dentistry just across the border for cheap. I used to have an actual not lovely dental policy where I would get check ups for a $10 copay, 95-100% on crowns and fillings, surgery etc.

I mean yeah you can find good policies but just generally speaking as a person who doesn't have health coverage through their employer most dental policies offered end up loving you.

HEY VAPER posted:About 1/3rd as much as I'm paying now for group death. well you said you're paying 30% of your salary so a third of that is still too much imo idk why we can't just get socialized medicine already, the concept of profit driven healthcare is ridiculous

Moridin920 posted:well you said you're paying 30% of your salary so a third of that is still too much imo Oh I agree that it definitely was hosed big time before obamacare. I'm only saying that in my personal world bubble, it's gotten significantly worse since Obamacare and that I'm now seriously considering living without healthcare because I realistically can't afford it anymore and the coverage I'm paying for now isn't very good since I can't afford my copays now.

yeah it's definitely hosed some people and helped others, didn't mean to imply it was good for everyone

http://www.nytimes.com/2014/09/21/us/drive-by-doctoring-surprise-medical-bills.html?_r=0 Before his three-hour neck surgery for herniated disks in December, Peter Drier, 37, signed a pile of consent forms. A bank technology manager who had researched his insurance coverage, Mr. Drier was prepared when the bills started arriving: $56,000 from Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan, $4,300 from the anesthesiologist and even $133,000 from his orthopedist, who he knew would accept a fraction of that fee. He was blindsided, though, by a bill of about $117,000 from an “assistant surgeon,” a Queens-based neurosurgeon whom Mr. Drier did not recall meeting.

well right but the insanity is that the education should be super cheap or free like it is in other sane countries so the doctors wouldn't have to go into crushing debt and it would be a non issue

if 10 American adults have 1 dollar and the eleventh has a million the 'average' is going to be ~$100,000 but that doesn't mean everyone has $100,000. even right above that chart in the image you posted it says look at the median for a more accurate number. don't be obtuse indeed.

Most of these places are just a jobs program for the unskilled so they have a shitload of people who can't help you in the healthcare industry.
