Some time ago you asked if there were any famous volcanic eruptions that Greeks would have been familiar with. Well, there is one: The Minoan eruption from the 2nd millennium BC. It may have led to the downfall of the Minoan Crete civilization and contributed to the myths of Atlantis, given that the island of Santorini, where the volcano sits, was basically destroyed. Oh, and the caldera's still active, having erupted as recently as 1950.
