I had dog patrols the outsides of the prison but it only found a tunnel once. I also have dog patrols inside and boy does that work a lot better. Most tunnels get dug only 1 or 2 tiles and get found. Also do regular cell block searches, I have divided my 300 prisoner block into 5 roughly equal blocks and search them at night at random, following where the CIs think there is more contraband.

I cant do the shakedown thing at night anymore, there's about 2000 places to search so if I start at 1am it goes on till noon. Also there is the whole problem with searching the food tables, that food gets relegated to storage never to be used again and is a PITA. It's due to the guards not placing back the food correctly and then it's moved to storage by the cooks.

The thing is that that table doesn't take into account you using prisoners to supplement your cooks - so if you're willing to let prisoners into your kitchens, that probably lets you cut down on paid staff by at least 25%. Also, it goes all the way up to a 700 prisoner prison, which itself is an absolutely ridiculously large prison. I think a more typical upper limit for most players is 200-300 prisoners.

I haven't really bothered to figure out the optimal numbers for my kitchen equipment or staff but those fridge and cooker numbers look high to me too. I think it's for "High" meal quantity, instead of the default "Medium", which is probably why.

Absorbs Smaller Goons
Mar 16, 2006
Yeah you can make a copy of that good spreadsheet and change the High meal quantity to low or medium and it changes the calculations. It's still a bit on the high side IMO, but with the bugginess of multiple kitchens I'd double the amount of cooks just to be sure. I have 40 working a 20 cooker 10 fridge kitchen and a secondary 8 cooker 4 fridge kitchen. Since they keep shuffling poo poo around you need more, but my prisoners are always well fed.

If only I could fix clothing...I keep adding janitors and it wont do crap. About 1/4 of my prison has desperate need for clothing.

Yeah so what I found was that 10 guards show up before the first tazer class is scheduled. Soon as it hits the top of the hour they all just leave and the classroom sits empty.
The second class turns up before the class and does the class normally, as do any subsequent classes that day.
The 10 guards (10 is the max class size for tazers) who did the first class can't attend any others that day so eventually you'll end up with 10 who never earn tazer certification. The work around I've found until they fix the bug is to have a classroom with only a few desks so you reduce the guards who can't get the training. But keep in mind this might screw up your prisoner classes, and is something you need to do everytime you hire more guards.

Try cancelling the early class after getting the later one working. That should leave the only tazer class at the timeslot that works, and let everyone finish it. Just don't touch the automatic reschedule button, it will reset the tazer class to the broken timeslot.

I was getting sort of annoyed because I wanted slightly more land in one direction, but since I had started on a large map I couldn't buy less than 80km, until I found out that right at the top of each save file is OriginW and OriginH, which seems to do nothing except determine the size of the land chunks it allows you to purchase. One axis is always just the same as the current width/height of your lot, as it would have to be, but the other is half of the original width or height of your lot. Figured someone else might find this useful.

Cut down (dismantle) and sell some trees if you have any. Otherwise, the save is in plain text and you can just add the money (open it and search for balance).

Since tunnelers will go towards gaps, is it possible to stop escapes by making a gap in the perimeter and stationing armed guards next to it, or are the prisoners smart enough to avoid that?

That's the known way to cheese it. Station dogs not armed guards, they will sniff out the tunnels fast enough. Although if they get to this point, it may be a matter of a few in game hours for them to finish the tunnels and so I'd suggest having dogs patrol your cells blocks constantly.

It's already a kind of lovely run, cause while building the cell blocks (51x60), somehow the foundation didn't really pop in until after I placed all the interior walls... Which got reduced to rubble.

Do you have long enough work blocks in your regime? I think both kitchen and workshop intros need 2 hours.

Also you can definitely have prisoners work laundry and cleaning without any training. Use the deployment view to assign them to rooms.

Have a dog patrol through your deliveries and make sure the route from there to your kitchen passes through a metal detector. That'll catch most contraband, at least.

I think that just means the kitchen broke for a bit. I've had pots straight from the stove end up in storage. They'll probably never get moved back anywhere, so just have them dumped.

Impractical practicality
This is what one of my experimental prisons looked like in the last version and I haven't played in a few months. 24/7 yard all the time and a platoon of armed guards which I noticed could shoot through fences hence the outdoors.

I'm curious to see how these "super" prisoners from the new version would handle my "perfect" prison.

Going to try this plan again and see how it works with legendary killer prisoners to deal with. I'd be impressed my method could be broken.

I'm assuming that works because with all those guns at the ready, they stay suppressed enough to not cause trouble. But I think just sprinkling a few of the new "fearless" prisoners in there would be enough to ignite that powder keg.

(Also, do they eat? Cause I know starvation wasn't working in at least one of the previous versions, but it's back now, so you'll have to figure out a way to feed them if you're not already)

Tunnels only ever come from toilets and dismantling the toilets will reveal the tunnels.

This is what got me. They were close to one of my main pipe lines, but also the opposite side to where Id expect a tunnel. Thanks for clearing up the toilet thing. Im guessing theyre false, but now...

I replaced all free/shower time with yard time, bulldozed my actual yards, and tricked out the common room in each cell block to have just about everything prisoners could ever want. Then I assigned the common room and showers as a "yard". This is working out so much better than a more standard approach. They have the freedom to attend to whatever their needs are at the moment, but can't run off and spend their free time on the canteen benches, murdering protective custody dudes who also came there for free time or meals. Dunno why they like those loving canteen benches so much - I gave them benches right next to their cells. They also don't have to sit in the shower for 45 minutes after they've already cleaned themselves anymore. It's an incredibly peaceful prison now. No fights, no deaths, and I've only had one tunnel.

The canteen benches thing and the thing where everyone stands in the doorway of the canteen for the first 45 minutes of meal time are probably the two biggest 'weird prisoner behavior' problems.

The shower thing is annoying but working as intended, they have a block of time scheduled to stand in the showers, they stand in the showers when they're assigned, whether or not they need to shower, whether or not they've already showered.

Yeah, this is kinda how I did it in my last prison, except that it had actual outdoor yards, which extended into big communal shower/toilet rooms, and rec rooms. I'd wake them up in the morning with like 3 hours of yard time, and it let them just get most of their bathroom, shower, exercise, recreation, family and freedom needs out of the way before breakfast, and before the day's work regime.

I'd also recommend toilets, rec stuff and maybe phones in the canteen itself, mealtime has kinda the same problem as shower time, where they tend to stand around with nothing to do after they're done.

No clue what prison exchange is, as I just bought the game during the last sale, but if you wanna get a taste of what I've been cooking, you can put this file in your savegame dir (hopefully that works...). I've made some changes since the screenshot you quoted, most notably getting rid of visitation (loving contraband vector...), adding a bigger solitary section, and also a forestry and workshop. If you want to put visits back in, you can see from the screenshot how you could chop up the workshop. If nothing else, you can sell the whole place for about 300k.

The canteen layout went through some iterations as well, since as hailthefish mentioned, it's easy to have real issues with bottlenecks during eating hours. I think I've ameliorated that a bit by lining the entrance with serving tables, so the prisoners are encouraged to pick up their food and walk deeper in for the actual seating, but there's definitely some stuff I'll be doing differently when I cash this place in for a bigger plot.
