The Oncoming Storm
It's worth noting that the reason the Khar-Selim had to use normal engines in the story was because using a hyperdrive would have triggered the whole death fleet thing, as we just saw.

That log from the Khar-Selim still haunts me even 10 years later. I can only imagine the utter horror of being part of the crew of a ship that's traveled the farthest out in space your race has ever been and then be told by the radar operator that the blips showing up on the radar aren't yours.

It's like the video says, you have to act immediately when the mission starts to save them all.

I like Homeworld but had to stop like halfway because not having a fast forward button really brought the game to a crawl in some of the missions.

Fuck you say?!

It has issues when you manage to save all 6. Or had, since I'm only on video 1 right now.

Haegemonia, and Nexus are the only two games that come remotely close. And both of those had...issues.

That said, I have beaten Haegemonia more than I have Homeworld :o
The music and soundtrack in amazing.

The gameplay in Homeworld crushes all competition, though.

Oh salvage corvettes. You adorable darlings.
Edit: To be fair to the AI, targetting salvage corvettes with extreme prejudice is never a bad idea.

I once played through the game attempting a capture-only run, which is not that difficult, but I tried to see if I could save all six cryotrays AND capture all the assault frigates. Turns out it was entirely possible, though it needed prepwork in Mission 2 in the way of constructing all the salvage corvettes I'd need to complete the task. While it takes 2 corvettes to salvage a frigate, latching on with just a single one will severely hamper its ability to maneuver and get clean shots on anything. While I worked on capturing one frigate at a time, the other corvettes were assigned to keep the frigates occupied and make it harder for them to line up shots against my salvage team.

No matter how many times I've played through the campaign, I still get chills from this mission :ohdear:

F4, F8! Aggressive Claw.

This combination is burnt into my SOUL.

Fun things happen when you only have a partial number of salvage corvettes on the target. Though Assault Frigates are actually one of the best ships at resisting salvaging due to their armaments.

Edit: You know, I never even THOUGHT to capture the cryo bay first instead of the frigates.

Remembering this little fact makes your life soooo much easier in the long run. Especially with certain later missions.

If you want a piece of real history, try looking up For Crew and Country. It's a piece about the DE Samuel B. Roberts (put together by interviewing the survivors), which was with Taffy-3 during the Battle of Leyte Gulf. In this case, the 'unexpected blips' weren't completely alien, but they were still the heaviest concentration of the IJN bearing down on a handful of USN DDs and DEs who had only expcted to be shooing submarines away from the vessels they were escorting.

I've owned this game since it came out, and have beaten it at least once a year, followed by Cataclysm. The Burning of Kharak is such a colossal gutpunch that, even as bitter and desensitized as I claim to be, I will never fail to get choked up. Kudos to Relic for the perfect combination of music, atmosphere, voicework, and a frantic scramble to save the cryotrays, to set the tone better than anything seen hence.

During the 'battle' playback, there's a blink and you miss it moment, where, shortly after the Atmosphere-Depletion Weapons are deployed, one of the transmissions states a projected death toll of 88 million. Kharak, at its most-populous, had roughly 100 million people on it.

The Manual goes into a huge amount of detail, and really goes to great lengths to make you feel attached to the otherwise-faceless and nameless crew and survivors, to the point that the first 40 or so pages of the 115-page book is entirely the history of the world, the kiith, and the tremendous effort of building the mothership.

It's pretty interesting to play the other side, makes some differences to the plot and also makes your ships look a lot less advanced compared to theirs, I really like that they allowed to do that even though the storyline favored the Kushans.

It makes no difference to the plot. There's the cosmetic changes to the Fleet, as well as a couple different minor units later on.

This game has easily one of my favorite video game stories ever. It's got such elegance and wonder to it, you can tell it was a real labor of love, and a truly collaborative effort. So much detail goes into every inch of this game, it bursts with richness. No stone went unturned. This game is a monument to what games could and should be. It's an RTS I think even non-RTS fans could really savor.

I'm so on board with this LP. I've been playing Homeworld since pretty close to when it came out. I remember when my brother's friend came to visit for a few days and brought it with him. It was mindblowing then and it still gives me goosebumps now. There are so many "HOLY poo poo" moments that feel organic and not shoe-horned in. That being said, I find it very strange that despite near-universal acclaim, there are a LOT of people who have never even heard of the game.

I can't wait for the Salvage Corvette abuse. I have very fond memories of putting my entire fleet in Wall formation in the final level and the game not being able to draw them all at the same time.

I love this game.

Homeworld is god-damned beautiful, not just because of its music and art direction, but because of its voice work (Fleet Intelligence especially) and its minimalism (there is almost no HUD, so the screen is always dominated by the emptiness of space). The HD remake will be gorgeous, I really don't think they can go wrong with it provided they change nothing and do just a straight port.

I remember when I first played HW2 and mistaking the Flack Frigate for a 1:1 analog for the Assault Frigate and having a minor meltdown when I sent a whole wall of like 15 of them at an enemy Battlecruiser and they all got annihilated in seconds.

I was like "what the hell, these things are like wrecking balls," only to learn they were anti-fighter ships with near zero attack power to them. I felt like such an rear end.

And the fact that they just straight up murdered the captain. He told them why, the interogation was probably complete.
Then he got lynched.

It actually helps that we don't ever get (most of) their names or their characters, just the emblems and voices in the radio and function descriptions. It's so serious it's sterile and it really gives you the image of people trying to stay professional in an impossible situation.

I think the issue was that it didn't give you enough space or maneuverability/speed with all the various units to make any sort of formations/tactics viable other than "FORM A GIANT WALL OF LASERS AND :black101:".

And the IMP v REB balance wasn't that big a problem. However, a lot of units felt superficial compared to others in the same faction: many different transports, Carrack Light Cruiser and one or two more that I forget were quickly rendered obsolete but neither side had a definitive advantage unless you built/focused on the wrong fleet composition.

Also, Imperials were better solely because assassination missions.

Are there any mods of Homeworld 1 and Cataclysm? I remember there being at least one Star Wars and Star Trek mod for Homeworld 2.
