Homeworld HD remake? Nice!

Mostly because I can hear that amazing soundwork in higher quality.

That log from the Khar-Selim still haunts me even 10 years later. I can only imagine the utter horror of being part of the crew of a ship that's traveled the farthest out in space your race has ever been and then be told by the radar operator that the blips showing up on the radar aren't yours.

If you want a piece of real history, try looking up For Crew and Country. It's a piece about the DE Samuel B. Roberts (put together by interviewing the survivors), which was with Taffy-3 during the Battle of Leyte Gulf. In this case, the 'unexpected blips' weren't completely alien, but they were still the heaviest concentration of the IJN bearing down on a handful of USN DDs and DEs who had only expcted to be shooing submarines away from the vessels they were escorting.

Also something that doesn't get enough praise is the battle chatter that to my knowledge only exists in Homeworld and Company of Heroes (also by Relic). In both games it adds so much to the general atmosphere it's unreal.

Not an RTS game, but Freelancer's com chatter really helped make things feel alive, even if it was obviously artificial. You could easily hear the game piecing voiceclips together, but it gave the NPCs some life as you could peek into what the rest of the universe was doing day-to-day while you played.
