FizFashizzle posted:one year i had a job interviewing people at dragoncon for some third rate production company in atlanta. i got a press pass and got to go backstage or whatever. The entire cast of serenity was there that year and it was a big deal. the line to see them was around the block. every single one of the fans was some obese person in terrible suspenders. i can confirm this actually happened don't ask me how. i just can

Gallow posted:Let's make sure we put the hate in the proper place here. Joss was the writer, but Jean-Pierre Jeunet directed it. Why anyone thought getting the French Terry Gilliam to direct an Alien sequel was the right call is more confusing. I'd still rather watch that one than Alien 3. no, that's wrong. would it really be so difficult for you to doublecheck on wikipedia or something before you try to "correct" someone?

Who What Now posted:You know what's even goonier? The fedora-tipping retards that proclaim themselves to be above such petty things as liking or disliking a show. You know what? I watched the show. I liked it. I own the DVDs. I wore an orange knit Jayne cap to work and social functions. But now I watch and obsess over other television shows. It's no big deal. I wasn't ever that into Firefly, and now I couldn't care less about it. It's been years. I only play with my replica Wash plastic dinosaurs once every two weeks, tops. So yeah, people who are really into it still, unlike me, are pretty weird. But it's also pretty weird to be really not into it. Everyone should be more like me, a not-weirdo. Sure, I regularly employ prostitutes. But I don't tell them to roleplay as Inara anymore--I tell them to roleplay as my mother, like a normal person who isn't obsessed with pop culture trash.

redshirt posted:Buffy and Angel are awesome TV shows and you suck if you don't agree. If you've never watched them, your loss. I agree. But Firefly was only okay. It wasn't amazing or anything. But if Fox hadn't hosed it over so flagrantly, its fanbase probably wouldn't be as annoying as it is.

Popular Human posted:the great irony of Firefly is that it's now a cautionary tale for networks and resurrecting failed TV shows. It had a rabid, devoted fanbase that bought DVD sets for their family and friends and managed through sheer word-of-mouth and stubbornness to get the show remade into a feature film.... which didn't even hit #1 it's opening weekend and fizzled out immediately after. i think the lesson was: don't take a cult sci fi show that was aired out of order, shuffled around time slots, and cancelled before it could build an audience, and then release it as a stand-alone feature film and expect it to make lots of money. no one should have needed a "cautionary tale" to realize that wouldn't work. if whedon was doing anything other than conning the studio into giving him some up-front cash to fund his pet project, then he's an idiot. also the movie wasn't very good, but it got mostly positive reviews from critics, so i'm pretty sure people stayed away because they had no idea what it was, not because of its inherent shittiness
