“There is a strong sense of entitlement among some, not all, dog owners that they can run their dogs wherever they want,” said Mike Lynes, who, as the executive director of the Golden Gate Audubon Society, is concerned about the impact of all these dogs on the wild creatures in the parks, not to mention the humans.

“There is a lot of passion about this issue in San Francisco,” said Howard Levitt, the spokesman for the National Park Service here. “Dog conflicts are among the toughest to deal with.”

The statistic is so often repeated that it has become central to San Francisco’s self image: there are more dogs than children in the city.

“I don’t think we’re spoiling our dogs — I think they’re living a wonderful life,” Ms. Walters said. “I mean, we all live here in the Bay Area for a reason. We don’t live in Chicago.”

median household income in sf is 55k or something and the starting salary in the bay area for a programmer with no experience actually averages around 80-85k. (neither of those are including benefits)

it's high pay but there's still an experience and seniority scale

about the same, 85k but closer to 100k if you sign on with the really big firms (that want you to work unpaid overtime)

tho if you get one of the clutch municipal jobs with the wealthier cities you can make bank

mountain view had an assistant transportation engineer position advertised a couple months ago - $108k for one year contract (you interview for the job every year) with 2 years experience needed and would be advertising the position for the next 5 weeks or until they received 150 applications - i applied the first day and within 24 hours applications closed

my grandma still fairly regularly tells my dad "you should move back to $HOMETOWN and start up a practice here". dad has been in the same city for the last 35 years, married, had two kids, widowed, has had a practice in the same building since 1990, etc

6 years from retirement is a good time to pick up and move your life and career yea?

dogs are a lot like boats in that it's great to know a friend with one so you can pet it and take it on walks (ok, not a perfect analogy) but not deal with the maintenance

it's ok to have a dog when you have a couple of kids starting school b/c you're pretty stuck wherever you live, the kids get to learn about taking care of a dependent being that gives nothing back to you and also a number of years later about death, and lol you aren't going on any loving trips anyway

no more dogs and none when you're a couple. that's weird.

there was this weird couple that came into the computer shop once years ago, and they weren't related, but they obviously married the gender-swapped versions of themselves, they could have been siblings. they were weird and new yorky and when i booted their pc i saw the wallpaper of them and their 3 pugs
