So everyone knows about kagerou project by now but let's face it none of the original songs are good because jin loving sucks at the actual vocals part of vocaloid (utaite covers are p sweet though)

But kemu made this thing called pandora voxx where some originals are good enough that it actually takes a reasonably good human singer to sound better!!

Also, because I'm a huge fan of her work, I'm gonna link to JubyPhonic's channel. She has a ton of really good english covers of vocaloid songs. (Including a fair few of the songs from Kagerou Project.) Some of my favorites are Death Should Not Have Taken Thee, World's End Dancehall, The Game of Life, and Witch Hunt.

Oh, a new Vocaloid thread? I remember the Niconico Douga thread dying out long ago.

I'm still pretty interested in Vocaloid from a technology standpoint, for those cases where producers put in the time and care to tune the singers to mask their robotic aspects and have them sound as realistic as possible. It's a lot of work to get those kind of results, even when starting from a Vocaloid with a more realistic voice bank to start off with, and that's what got me interested in the technology in the first place.

Guys, find a woman who looks at you the way GhostStalker looks at every bald, obese, single 58 year old accountant from Tulsa who managed to win $4,000 by not wagering on a Final Jeopardy triple stumper.

I kinda got into Vocaloid somewhat after the videos from 39's Giving Day started making the rounds on the internet, especially the World Is Mine one. Had known about it somewhat peripherally from seeing cosplayers at New York Comic Con years ago, but the 39's Giving Day thing was my first major introduction. The next Comic Con, they had a screening of the full concert that overpacked the small panel room they had playing it, and needed to schedule an encore viewing. Also didn't help that Hiroyuki Ito and other Crypton people were there to do a Q&A panel and sign stuff after the screening as well. Started listening to some of the more popular songs at the time (World Is Mine, PoPiPo, Ievan Polka, other stuff) but didn't really get that deep into it.

Still, it was always there in the back of my mind, and if I saw some Vocaloid stuff, I'd get involved, like a rebroadcast of a concert in a movie theater at Union Square, or a screening of the 2013 Magical Mirai show, etc. Gotten to the point where I'm maining a modded Vocaloid Civ led by Miku in Civ V (made by the same guy who did the Metal Gear MSF Civ in Speedball's LP in the LP forums; the guy was gifted an account and still posts there from time to time, but not so much since the LP ended. The Civ in question makes culture victories pretty drat easy), so at some point, I could kinda be said to have gone whole hog into this.

Disappointed in the Letterman thing last night, Sharing The World is a weird song to listen to since Miku's English soundbank isn't all that great yet and the audience reaction was kinda telling. It is the theme song of the Expo though, and that's what she was on Letterman promoting, so I guess they had to use it. Pretty drat awkward, though.

Also wound up missing a Crypton/Miku panel today at NYCC that I didn't know about until I got to the con late to pick up my Crew stuff, which I'm kicking myself over now.

Got myself a ticket to the Miku Expo concert at Hammerstein next Friday; hey, had to spend my Jeopardy money on something, right? Wondering if any one else here bought some either for LA this weekend or for New York the following one.

Also, still one of my favorite MMD videos:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CT11bhh5_9U

Yea, too bad they didn't get someone worth a drat to make a song. As for real english vocaloid its extremely rare to find something with both correct english and inflection. But its happening more often.

A student in my Japanese 5 class did a speech on why Hatsune Miku, a robot voice program, is his favorite character and said he has a giant Miku collection. He explained afterward that he had spent nearly 700 dollars altogether to fly to New York and watch her concert with a VIP ticket. I don't know what exactly VIP access would grant someone going to see a hologram dance while someone times robot voice to it, but I now know the price tag at least. Also two annoying guys in Japanese 2 did a terrible skit that was vaguely related to how much they liked Miku.

I also stayed up through Letterman's awful show because the pre-show announcement called her "Hatsoon Miku" and I was desperate to watch an aged talk show host try and explain what she was. In the end, he barely talked about her and only had a mildly amusing expression, plus the song itself was completely incomprehensible as in I could not make out one single word in any language, so I went to sleep disappointed.

Those are my vocaloid stories.

Oh god Vocaloid thread, time to be a huge nerd!

I really like seeing what people can do with this program, to be honest. You get a lot of cute pop songs, but there are a LOT of 'horror' songs that end up working really well due to the unearly kind of sound they have. I personally tend to listen to rock and heavy metal songs, where they often use filters to make the vocaloid they're using sound like they're screaming. And when they don't, I find that high, light voice mixes really well with the harsh guitar rifs and bassline.

idk, maybe I'm just weird.

And that's exactly the song I was going to post to highlight it.

In general I'm not a fan of Rin and Len's voices, but there's a few songs around that I dig. The first mainly because it really showcases how artificial they sound (plus I totally love the bit that starts around 3:15 and ends with oooooh Wow!), and the second because it messes with the crazy range the program can sing in.

"Yeh've forged a magnificent sword."

"This one's only practice. The real sword I intend to forge will be three times longer."

"Can there really be a sword as monstrous as that in this world?"

"Yes. I can see that sword... Somewhere out there..."
MikitoP is one of the better producers. Shutter Chance is a great song about being the one who can't move on from a relationship (the person in the video isn't the one singing it), while Sorry For Being an Ordinary Magical Girl is one of his better upbeat ones. (He doesn't do very many of them.) Sadly, no subs videos, the one with both of those got taken off the other day. Annoying.

Kikuo is one of my favorites, even if some of his stuff is a bit hit-and-miss. For the full listening experience, listen to a Kikuo song once and THEN look up the lyrics, because this is a man where a happy song is "two children freeze to death (but they become the sun and moon)." Cherry Blossoms Before Dawn is a pretty good example. For people that like the music but can't stand actual Vocaloid singing, that same YT account has songs from an album where Kikuo had a human singer; Sunshine is Brief is one I particularly like.

In my experience, the best way to actually follow new Vocaloid stuff is to find a few songs you like, look at the channels that translated them, and see what else they've translated... Especially since that's one of the few ways to find good songs from the worse Vocaloids. I probably wouldn't have listened to Drop Pop Candy at all if I hadn't liked another random song the translator group did. (The producer and an utaite did a cover on that one as well, if you're not the Vocaloid type.) VGPerson doesn't do much translating these days, but his channel's good; Game Specter 2 is top ten Vocaloid stuff, easy.

In terms of old stuff, you pretty much have to look for songs where the artists worked with the old robotic voices instead of fighting it. Stomp The Enemy and Online Game Addicts Sprechchor are good examples of songs that actually sound worse with human voices instead of weird musical robots.

For all who dislike the robotic voice, here's another tonal Append example that make Miku's voice smoother and more humanish. This is also a good example of how a good effort vocaloid editor can make Miku sound good enough to mimic the original.

Man, I was going to mention kikuo my next post! I guess you've covered him for me, but the dude is a master at "songs that sound cute and happy but are secretly horrible." One of my favorites has to be "I'm Sorry, I'm sorry" which at first glance sounds like a song about cannibalism...but is actually about prostitution. Oh, interesting to hear that other people are fans of Gumi and Ia, I think I'd call those two my top favorites. I don't suppose I should be too surprised, since those two seem to be second and third in general popularity behind Miku, though a far second and third. As mentioned before, I'm mostly fascinated with realistic synthesis, and it seems like those two come up with the highest consistency. It was also a Gumi song that exposed me to the existence of Vocaloid (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-hZNtYfErfE), so I'm also a little bit biased.
