Everyone who's all like "Urban 'thugs'/POOOOORS" deserve to get lost behind that gaping abyss beyond Hells' Kitchen late at night while looking for their ~Times Square~ hotel. After spending $150 on that loving Applebees because they can pretend they're absorbing culture by checking out the neon lights and tourist trap stores while avoiding anything that they wouldn't find in their suburban hellhole mall back at home. I am a mixed race hoodbaby who grew up in the Bronx, and the only thing worse than living in the Bronx is being too poor to continue to live in the Bronx. The only pleasure I got during those dreary rides home was watching white tourists and sheltered hipster kids squirm at the 149th St. station.

there was a throwaway line in one of Kurt Vonnegut's book that goes "Chicago is a better city than New York because Chicago has alleys. The garbage doesn't pile up on the sidewalks. Delivery vehicles don't block main thoroughfares." He has a point there

Went through the radio, no hip hop stations. There's a place called Germantown. People was talking German on the goddamn radio. I'm lovin it Gotta escape the nanny handout state. Literally the first day of my first job in a store right by the Port Authority, I watched a hobo get kicked off of a mattress she had placed outside of our front door while combing her hair with something that was not a comb like a fat bargain bin Ariel

I dunno I regularly walk the 50s and 8th-9th late at night and don't see anything weird(at least above baseline nyc weird). I don't know if it gets worse further south or west. I try to stay out of the time square part. I just know it as a place with lots of restaurants and don't really think twice about it. Obviously these are just my impressions and I have no real evidence beyond them.

That's why people like Austin, it's the most segregated big city in the state, so you don't have to see all the Mexicans like in SA or all the blacks like in Houston.

Houston is what would happen if The Blob swallowed Atlanta, rolled sideways a few hundred miles, and then slowly rotted in the middle of a poisoned bayou. It's hot, totally disordered, crime-ridden, flat, and strapped into some kind of shape by ring roads like an obese man stuffed into five layers of Spanx. etalian fucked around with this message at 06:47 on Oct 13, 2014 |

The only time in my life I've ever been robbed was around there. And yeah, Times Square is the place to Avoid At All Costs. My job used to be right after the stores began to taper off, so every day's commute to work was slowed down by fat tourists waddling sloooowly forward, clogging up the sidewalk while gawking at tacky merchandise and staring up at the high buildings. Tourists can be cool, and I know Times Square is an amazing thing to see if you grew up elsewhere, but it only takes 30 seconds of observing the people directing their body traffic around you to notice that taking slow, shuffling steps in one of the busiest sidewalks of the city is being an rear end in a top hat.

Yeah but you get to like, go do whatever you want outside your apartment with no bullshit like driving for 30 minutes first, and then you can get drunk there and come home without endangering the lives of others. Home is for sleeping and eating. Also that's why you move away when you have kids I guess.

pretty sure those penthouses are mainly a way for very, very rich russian and chinese and wherever else oligarchs/gangsters/tycoons to launder money by converting it into real estate. actually i've heard that nyc has too much ultra-mega-luxury-plus apartments now and that developers way overestimated demand. also new yorkers why is there so much crime in midtown

Anytime I leave NYC and go to another city everything closes at 8 and no one delivers food except chain pizza places and there's no culture (come see the community theater's production of Oklahoma!) and there's like 1 gay bar and if I want to drink I have to find a DD or figure out how the hell I'm going to get back to the hotel and yeah it just sucks and is boring.
