ElGroucho posted:I didn't know there was a name for 1980's mom rock ok this is actually sort of important to understand if you want to "get" a lot of 70s, 80s, and 90s rock. "prog rock" actually means something pretty specific. it was a subgenre of rock that was a bit more experimental than the pop-ier mainstream stuff and a bit more of an attempt at "serious music" in terms of experimenting with rhythm and other aspects of the music in a more classical way. for some reason, during the early nineties, EVERYTHING was getting called alt rock and people used "progressive" as a synonym. i have no idea why, ask a linguist. NIN was getting called alt rock and progressive. it was a really weird time. we now have the benefit of hindsight and can realize that everyone was being incredibly stupid, and thus preserve real prog rock for the coming generations.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aXbdQ2MwoXY If I cried out loud Over sorrows I've known And the secrets I've heard It would ease my mind Someone sharing the load But I won't breathe a word We're two of a kind Silence and I We need a chance to talk things over Two of a kind Silence and I We'll find a way to work it out When the children laughed I was always afraid Of the smile of the clown So I close my eyes Till I can't see the light And I hide from the sound I can hear the cry Of a leaf on a tree As it falls to the ground I can hear the call Of an echoing voice And there's no one around
