So what's happening in Season 5?

The show does what it wants so who knows what's actually going to happen, but conservatively we can say that it will be loosely based on A Feast for Crows and A Dance with Dragons. I suspect that the major stuff from ADWD that appears to have been cut (AEGON) has been pushed back to Season 6 and that this season will draw mainly from AFFC and supplement it with the main characters' stories from ADWD.

I can (maybe) tell you what's not happening: there has been no mention of the Iron Islands, so we can assume that Balon Greyjoy will continue to lead an inexplicably charmed life and "Yara" will continue to not do anything; no Aegon (for now), no Quentyn, no Victarion, and no Marwin means no Meereenese Knot, or at least a dramatically simplified one; and I think that characters like Sam, Davos, and Brienne will dramatically diverge from their original storylines.

With that in mind, we can expect to see the following highlights (not in order):

- The Valonqar prophecy
- Dead Tywin cameo
- Jon is elected Lord Commander
- Cersei vs. Margaery
- Jaime and Bronn travel to Dorne
- Littlefinger and Sansa get creepy
- Melisandre cozies up to Jon
- Bran learns how to be a tree offscreen
- Ed, fetch me a block
- Stupid Sexy Sand Snakes
- Arya trains in Braavos at the House of Black and White
- The Boltons return to Winterfell
- Somebody mutilates Myrcella
- Barristan does nothing
- Cersei rearms the Faith and congratulates herself on a job well done
- Dany continues to do the exact opposite of what everyone wants her to do
- Stannis campaigns in the North and might finally get the treatment he deserves from the showrunners
- The Meereenese Knot, severely cut down since it looks like Tyrion is the only one travelling to Meereen this season
- The Winterfell Huis Clos
- Cersei gets arrested
- Tyrion joins the circus
- Cersei's Walk of Shame
- Robert Strong
- Theon learns his name
- Dany rides Drogon and probably doesn't poo poo herself
- For the Watch
- Varys kills Kevan
- Winter comes
- And most importantly, the show passes the books

This spoiler thread also serves as a de facto book discussion thread since it's the only place on the forums where you can talk about the series with other book readers without using spoilers tags, that also isn't the Bad Thread.

To facilitate discussion, here is a list of articles that I suggest reading. This list is by no means all-inclusive, and many popular theories are missing because there aren't any comprehensive write ups available yet. As for what is listed, you may disagree with some of the authors' assertions and conclusions, but still take away a greater appreciation of the world of ASOIAF.

Resources

TWOW Sample Chapters: A compilation of the sample chapters of The Winds of Winter that have been released to the public. Includes full chapters, summaries, and partial transcripts. The following chapters are included: Theon I, Arianne I, Mercy (Arya I), Alayne (Sansa I), Arianne II [Summary], Ser Barristan I, Victarion I [Partial Transcript], Tyrion I [Brief Summary], Ser Barristan II [Summary], Tyrion II.

The ASOIAF Timeline: It is no secret that GRRM is terrible at accurate measurements and judging distances. Nevertheless, this timeline is an attempt to organize the events of the series into chronological order using evidence from the books. Dates aren't necessarily precise, and by the authors' own admission there are many assumptions, but it remains the most precise ASOIAF timeline in existence.

Essays

Winterfell Huis Clos: A 300,000 word analysis of the events surrounding Winterfell in ADWD. The author's conclusions are controversial but their meticulous examination of the recurring themes and symbolism in ASOIAF during the first section should be considered required reading for any ASOIAF fan.

Race for the Iron Throne: In the author's own words, a historical and political analysis of A Song of Ice and Fire. Written by a PhD in history, Race for the Iron Throne discusses the series on a chapter by chapter basis, examining the story, characters, political systems, and historical influences of the books.

Untangling the Meereenese Knot: A five-part critical response to the prevailing notion that Dany's storyline in ADWD was useless and boring. The author recontextualizes the conflict in Meereen and posits that it is far more interesting (and relevant) than it first appears.

Other Wars: A six-part analysis of Jon Snow's character and ADWD storyline. Jon's tenure as Lord Commander of the Night's Watch is marked by a series of challenges to his core values. On multiple occasions, Jon is forced to choose between adhering to his vows as a brother of the Night's Watch and acting upon his valiant desire to do the right thing. The author of examines how Jon's noble heart ultimately causes his downfall.

The Pyre Revisited: A short essay that finally sets the record straight about Dany's alleged immunity to fire. The author of this article reexamines the climax of AGOT and identifies the true reason for the miracle that occurred on the Pyre.

One Does Not Simply Warg Into Hodor: Often overlooked by readers, Bran is guilty of one of the most evil acts in the entire series: the willful mental subjugation of another human being. The author of this short essay summarizes the depravity of Bran's actions and hints at some of the disturbing potential consequences of his behavior.

Wars and Politics of Ice and Fire: A series of essays analyzing the military and political dimensions of ASOIAF written by multiple different authors. The site features analyses of specific characters and their contributions to the present political landscape of the series, as well as speculation for future conflicts.

Theories

R + L = J: Jon Snow is actually the son of Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark. By far the most popular theory in the fandom, it is so well supported that it can be pretty much considered a fact. The article I linked only encompasses the first three books in the series but remains one of the most comprehensive guides to the theory. After ASOS, references and evidence for R+L=J become much more subtle and rare, as if GRRM realized how quickly the theory could spread thanks to the development of a devoted internet fanbase.

Sothron Ambitions: Before Rhaegar Targaryen kidnapped Lyanna Stark and Robert's Rebellion brought about the end of the Targaryen dynasty, the Great Houses of Westeros were already secretly conspiring to overthrow Aerys II.

Aegon Blackfyre: Aegon (Young Griff) is not actually the son of Rhaegar Targaryen and Elia Martell, but a Blackfyre impostor that Varys and Illyrio Mopatis are propping up as a real Targaryen. He is descended from the female Blackfyre line and is ignorant of his real identity.

Stannis is the Night's King: Stannis Baratheon is destined to lead the Others. His story has witnessed a transition from the power of fire to the power of ice, and he is currently on a collision with a tragedy of such magnitude that it may break him and turn him against humanity. This theory combines symbolism, thematic beats, and speculation to predict the direction of Stannis' future arc.

Dead Man making GBS threads: Tywin Lannister was poisoned by Oberyn Martell before his death. A theory first suggested more than a decade after ASOS was released, this theory ties a number of strange coincidences and subtle clues together into a compelling theory.

Blue Rose in Ice: Following his death at the hands of the Night's Watch stewards, Jon Snow's consciousness will live on in his direwolf Ghost and his dead body will be stored in an ice cell in the Wall, ready to be revived by some enterprising Red Priestess. GRRM has been less than subtle that Jon's story isn't over, but this theory specifically points out what happens next. I'm putting this here for posterity before the show does something completely different.

"Dany, mi esposa," he says, as the camera zooms in on his smiling face. "Yo Acabamos de regresar de la tumba para continuar nuestro matrimonio."

But then, a tense musical sting! His eyes narrow. "Daenerys. Este hombre que sostiene en manera de un amante. żQuién es él?"

"No, marido!" She leaps to her feet, quickly buttoning her blouse shut. "No es lo que piensas, lo juro por los Siete!"

"Khal Drogo, puedo explicarlo," Daario says, his thick, bristling moustache shimmering with sweat. And gold. "żNo le gustaría por favor calmarte?"

I use Aegon "Egg" whateverlastname frequently in Rimworld to recognize a character. I wouldn't rule out the Greyjoy stuff forever. They're already springing Dorne on an audience who is barely aware of it, most show watchers probably only know about it because of Oberyn last season. Sure they have Jaime and Bronn going along to help the audience understand, but since they're doing all of this for Dorne, I wouldn't completely rule out the Greyjoy plot. I would expect us to go there at some point, at least to develop Euron or a Euron-like character. There's enough meat in that subplot that I would hope it isn't dropped altogether. It might be another season before it happens though.

I think it's possible that Euron might absorb some of Victarion's role in the plot and get introduced at the start of Season 6. But I think Aegon's chopped.

I dunno, that would be weird if Season 5 ends with Dany flying off on Drogon. Maybe it's not a big deal to introduce them later if the Greyjoys are a part of the endgame but it doesn't seem that way reading the books.

The answer is, mate, because I want to do you slowly. There has to be a bit of sport in this for all of us. In the psychological battle stakes, we are stripped down and ready to go. I want to see those ashen-faced performances; I want more of them. I want to be encouraged. I want to see you squirm.

Yeah I think you're right actually. The big new factions this season will be the Martells and the Sparrows, and to be honest both of those seem like they'll have a larger impact on the overall story than the Greyjoys. "Remember that awesome dude who died horribly last season? Well here's the rest of his family, and they're a) holding a Lannister hostage and b) pissed off" is a pretty compelling intro for the Martells, while "remember Theon's grumpy rear end in a top hat dad? Well he died, here are his uncles!!" isn't quite as interesting :v:

If season 5 does end with Dany flying off and finishing her ADWD plot, I wouldn't be surprised if the Ironborn fleet just appears from nowhere outside Meereen when she returns early in season 6. My guess is that plot-wise, the main reason Victarion arrives in Meereen is to provide ships to get Dany back to Westeros, and if that's actually the case then we don't need two season's worth of politics and exposition to get there. It'll really only take 1-2 scenes of "this is who we are (Theon's uncles), this is where we're going (Meereen) and why (to kidnap/marry the dragon queen and steal her dragons)" to fully establish them.

I just want to smile. Just once. I'd like to just, one time, go to Disney World and smile like the other boys and girls.
It'd be hilarious if the final shot of S5 was Dany flying off on Drogon and everyone took it as "gently caress yes :black101: FINALLY she's gonna fly to Westeros and burn the place down!" And then S6 just starts with her making GBS threads in a field.

I didn't get idiot from Doran at all...I think he plays idiot because it suits his end game of hanging out at the pool while everyone else croaks.

So what's the upside on his using Quentyn as a woefully-unprepared trump card? One less person to crowd up the pool?

It ended poorly, but sending Quinten to marry Danny was actually a fairly decent plan.

I'm not sure Doran is to blame for the Dornish BBQ.

I never took Quentyn's plot as Doran's trump card rather his plan B, or even C. I may be getting the order of things mixed up but the primary plan was to betroth Arianne to Viserys until Drogo put an end to that.
