Jon is challenged. --- So what's happening in Season 5? The show does what it wants so who knows what's actually going to happen, but conservatively we can say that it will be loosely based on A Feast for Crows and A Dance with Dragons. I suspect that the major stuff from ADWD that appears to have been cut (AEGON) has been pushed back to Season 6 and that this season will draw mainly from AFFC and supplement it with the main characters' stories from ADWD. I can (maybe) tell you what's not happening: there has been no mention of the Iron Islands, so we can assume that Balon Greyjoy will continue to lead an inexplicably charmed life and "Yara" will continue to not do anything; no Aegon (for now), no Quentyn, no Victarion, and no Marwin means no Meereenese Knot, or at least a dramatically simplified one; and I think that characters like Sam, Davos, and Brienne will dramatically diverge from their original storylines. With that in mind, we can expect to see the following highlights (not in order): - The Valonqar prophecy - Dead Tywin cameo - Jon is elected Lord Commander - Cersei vs. Margaery - Jaime and Bronn travel to Dorne - Littlefinger and Sansa get creepy - Melisandre cozies up to Jon - Bran learns how to be a tree offscreen - Ed, fetch me a block - Stupid Sexy Sand Snakes - Arya trains in Braavos at the House of Black and White - The Boltons return to Winterfell - Somebody mutilates Myrcella - Barristan does nothing - Cersei rearms the Faith and congratulates herself on a job well done - Dany continues to do the exact opposite of what everyone wants her to do - Stannis campaigns in the North and might finally get the treatment he deserves from the showrunners - The Meereenese Knot, severely cut down since it looks like Tyrion is the only one travelling to Meereen this season - The Winterfell Huis Clos - Cersei gets arrested - Tyrion joins the circus - Cersei's Walk of Shame - Robert Strong - Theon learns his name - Dany rides Drogon and probably doesn't poo poo herself - For the Watch - Varys kills Kevan - Winter comes - And most importantly, the show passes the books --- Confirmed Cast Additions The North Jonathan Byrne as Brant Crabbe. After ASOS, references and evidence for R+L=J become much more subtle and rare, as if GRRM realized how quickly the theory could spread thanks to the development of a devoted internet fanbase. Sothron Ambitions: Before Rhaegar Targaryen kidnapped Lyanna Stark and Robert's Rebellion brought about the end of the Targaryen dynasty, the Great Houses of Westeros were already secretly conspiring to overthrow Aerys II. Aegon Blackfyre: Aegon (Young Griff) is not actually the son of Rhaegar Targaryen and Elia Martell, but a Blackfyre impostor that Varys and Illyrio Mopatis are propping up as a real Targaryen. He is descended from the female Blackfyre line and is ignorant of his real identity. Stannis is the Night's King: Stannis Baratheon is destined to lead the Others. His story has witnessed a transition from the power of fire to the power of ice, and he is currently on a collision with a tragedy of such magnitude that it may break him and turn him against humanity. I use Aegon "Egg" whateverlastname frequently in Rimworld to recognize a character. It's like having someone named after you in Dwarf Fortress, only way better because he's not a single smiley face or dwarf-like icon. Medieval Lordling or medieval something background provides a good start for such a character.

I wouldn't rule out the Greyjoy stuff forever. They're already springing Dorne on an audience who is barely aware of it, most show watchers probably only know about it because of Oberyn last season. Sure they have Jaime and Bronn going along to help the audience understand, but since they're doing all of this for Dorne, I wouldn't completely rule out the Greyjoy plot. I would expect us to go there at some point, at least to develop Euron or a Euron-like character. There's enough meat in that subplot that I would hope it isn't dropped altogether. It might be another season before it happens though.

The big new factions this season will be the Martells and the Sparrows, and to be honest both of those seem like they'll have a larger impact on the overall story than the Greyjoys. "Remember that awesome dude who died horribly last season? Well here's the rest of his family, and they're a) holding a Lannister hostage and b) pissed off" is a pretty compelling intro for the Martells, while "remember Theon's grumpy rear end in a top hat dad? Well he died, here are his uncles!!" isn't quite as interesting If season 5 does end with Dany flying off and finishing her ADWD plot, I wouldn't be surprised if the Ironborn fleet just appears from nowhere outside Meereen when she returns early in season 6. My guess is that plot-wise, the main reason Victarion arrives in Meereen is to provide ships to get Dany back to Westeros, and if that's actually the case then we don't need two season's worth of politics and exposition to get there. It'll really only take 1-2 scenes of "this is who we are (Theon's uncles), this is where we're going (Meereen) and why (to kidnap/marry the dragon queen and steal her dragons)" to fully establish them.

It'd be hilarious if the final shot of S5 was Dany flying off on Drogon and everyone took it as "gently caress yes FINALLY she's gonna fly to Westeros and burn the place down!" And then S6 just starts with her making GBS threads in a field.

I never took Quentyn's plot as Doran's trump card rather his plan B, or even C. I may be getting the order of things mixed up but the primary plan was to betroth Arianne to Viserys until Drogo put an end to that.
