Better at what? At turning human relationships into things you can buy and sell? In exalting greed and tyranny as the greatest behaviors?
it's called buying and selling things. which is what people do naturally when the government doesn't try to stop them like in a 60s-era concrete box of a country like north korea and cuba.

what i don't get is how commies in these threads always talk about how you can't bring up the USSR and a bunch of other failed communist states, but then on a dime they also praise those states for their amazing achievements until the world ran in the opposite direction as fast as it could.

i mean if you're proposing something new then that's cool and i'm interested. but what i actually hear is a let's go with a giant rotting leftist state again. okay that'll be disastrous. that's self-deluded.

You seriously want a lengthy proposition in the middle of GBS, outlining a grand reconciliation between Marxist, anarchist, and liberal ideas? But I would suggest reading Karel Capek, for real.
does it have to be lengthy and grand? how about short and simple?

The revolution doesn't happen overnight - it has to be a transformative process that only begins with the violent overthrow of the bourgeoisie and seizure of the means of production. Full Communism demands as prerequisites highly advanced industry, automation, etc. The transition from Russia, Cuba, and China's unarguably agrarian economies could not produce the surplusses needed for communism without proceeding through stages of socialism to develop their internal economies and industrial strength in particular.
The achievements of those failed transitions were real and spectacular - all three realised in decades stunning developments in the sciences and industry that took the west hundreds of years to reach. The failures were also very real - Russia stalled into political repression and mismanagement for decades before ultimate collapse, while both Cuba and China are opening their economies to capitalism, presumably to avert the same catastrophic collapse that was seen in the USSR.

Pointing out the real victories of socilaist states while acknowledging their failure to reach the communist idea isn't contradictory.
oh my god.

if you based everything around morals nothing would work or get done.

see religion
the marxist-leninists in the USSR built a highly moral political system which looks really attractive, but didn't build a highly amoral legal system like in liberal countries based around protecting property rights. marxists see this as a plus.

but making law subordinate to political morality meant access to poo poo came through connections to party apparatchiks. modern russia is the same but more naked about it and dressed up in great russia nationalism. same poo poo. (and actually same leaders.) it really means looting on a scale that dwarfs things even like the 2008 financial crisis.

in communism, would you be allowed to get silicon valley billionaire rich by making tools and providing services people use and enjoy

no! only productive work will happen in communism, such as producing iron smelters, machine lubricants and thermonuclear weapons

the idea that life is fundamentally ugly and miserable has got to be a recipe for depression, life can be improved. but go back and read trotsky where he goes on insane megalomaniacal rants about mass collective experiments and creating superhumans. that's the utopian drive off a cliff.

i have a sense modern day communists (or the ones that are still out there) are embarrassed by this approach, and don't talk like that so much anymore
