That's the way it was, I believe. And yeah they never call it (I forget what it even gets called as, illegal forward progress?) so it would have been lovely to randomly call it on the last play of the game. Every single pile up in the history of football has had the ball carrier getting pushed forward and yeah "providing impetus" to the ball carrier is against the rules. Notre Dame had nothing to complain about, though, they gave up a 60 yard pass right before that - if they'd just blocked that pass (or just committed PI because in college that would have been a 15 yard gain, lol), they would've won.
