Speaking of horse racing, I have a theory that "gamers" are the kinds of people who would've been compulsive gamblers in centuries past. It's more socially acceptable these days to waste years of your life in front of your Xbox, instead of wasting money at the tables. People with anime-fan personalities would've been the types who were waaaaay too deep into religious revivals, or trashy romantic novels, or whatever nerdy stuff they had back then. e: Or they're both recent phenomena and I'm overthinking it.
