Michael Hale goes by the handle @dogboner on Twitter. To find the most famous of his 47,000 tweets, you'll have to scroll down the timeline to July 2014, when Hale posted a photo captioned, "Some guy using his laptop on the train like a Dumbass nerd lol." Wearing a silky, charcoal-colored button-down shirt that was sort of lazily unbuttoned, faded blue jeans, and boots, and typing on a laptop, the "Dumbass nerd" was Neil deGrasse Tyson, astrophysicist, nerd demigod, and reviver of the Cosmos television series. Like any good joke on social media, it backfired: A chunk of the internet exploded into rage as hot as planets forming. Hale later wrote a piece for Gawker titled, "How I Became Thousands of Nerds' Worst Enemy by Tweeting a Photo." It was all pretty great, and it highlighted Hale's Twitter account, which has been funny for about five years now. The self-righteous, humorless nerds have moved on to other matters, and Hale's still making jokes on Twitter.
