I just started watching hockey recently for stress relief, it's great. Don't follow any one team I just try and watch as many matches as I can. Question, how the flying gently caress do you identify players? Of course they have jersey numbers but it's so fast paced you often can't read them. It's alright in most other sports where players don't wear helmets and a ton of padding but in hockey everyone looks the same. Is it just that as you follow a team you learn to sort of subconsciously pick who's who by having learnt the way they skate, their usual positioning and such? I can hardly identify a single guy let alone every player in all 30 teams.

the more you watch it the more you start to be able to anticipate movement before it happens, like with where the puck is (probably) going to go, so following the puck and the players gets easier. I rarely have trouble picking out players at a glance now unless they're new to the team.

Yeah I thought it might be a skill acquired over time. Do you think it's weird to watch a sport you've never even played? Can you appreciate it? Hockey isn't really a thing in Australia. What we call hockey you call field hockey.

I played hockey as a kid, so I can't say really. I do know we've got at least a few AUS goons in SAS who are big hockey fans, you should head on over and post with us in the N/V thread.

Alright, will do. E: Might actually be able to play it next year though when I move to Brisbane (one of our 3 major cities), really would like to. But it's probably not so easy to get into since ice rinks aren't really in abundance here. krampster2 fucked around with this message at 08:05 on Oct 28, 2014 |

That's how I learned when I started watching as a kid. Just knew all the guys on my team (Washington Capitals) based on their build, skating style, positioning, etc. Then I learned the other teams they played a lot. Between watching enough hockey, playing the EA NHL games, and playing fantasy hockey, I know pretty much every regular in the league.

I dunno about the other EA games but the NHL series (while fun) is a really poor facsimile of actual hockey, and buggy as hell.

Soccer is the sport I follow most intensely and I reckon EA's take on it is pretty accurate. Hockey though would be a much harder sport to put into video game format so it doesn't surprise me. Also there's a much bigger dev team for FIFA of course.

From the NHL's Wikipedia page. quote:While the NHL does not hold one of the largest fan bases in North America, it does hold one of the most affluent fan bases.[149] Studies by the Sports Marketing Group conducted from 1998 to 2004 show that the NHL's fan base is much more affluent than that of the PGA Tour.[150] A study done by the Stanford Graduate School of Business in 2004, found that NHL fans in America were the most educated and affluent of the four major leagues. They were also found to be substantially more computer literate than the other fans. Further it noted that season-ticket sales were more prominent in the NHL than the other three because of the ability of the NHL fan to purchase them, something more out of reach for fans of the other leagues.[149] According to Reuters in 2010, the largest demographic of NHL fans was highly sought after group males aged 18–34, who were also shown to be more "tech savvy" than most fans.[151]

Yeah in terms of usefulness from a new fan's perspective, it's mostly just current players and roster construction. The gameplay isn't really accurate for real NHL games.

Then after that you gradually figure out the rest of the team when like #4 makes a really dumb play so you look him up and find out his name is Rob Scuderi and he makes 3.5 mil/year to be your worst defenseman which is hard to forget once you know

Kind of hard to stick to watching a sport if you don't have an attachment to any one team. Just a bit weird because I have no connection to North America whatsoever, so no reason to support a team other than just because I like the way they play.

The players you're watching will literally get called up the pros and then you can be all "Hell yeah i used to watch that guy play here!" I work an arena with a team and we get 5000-6000 attendance for a game so that pretty much fills the place. The team used to be UHL or one of the other scrub tier leagues, but a couple years ago changed over to AHL(the NHL farm system) and the calibre of play is much higher, much faster, much closer to what you'll see on the national ice UHL was awesome though because it was totally Goon with all the brawlers fighting
