Gen. John Campbell, head of coalition forces in Afghanistan, acknowledged Helmand "has been a very, very tough area" over the last several months.

"But we feel very confident with the Afghan security forces as they continue to grow in their capacity," he said.

correct, it was proto alqueda and we were literally giving bin laden some stinger missiles

ninja: really though that's kinda ironic if you think about it, we gave him big iron to take out the soviets who were our enemies, but then they eventually went away, so he became our enemy and we shacked up with new enemies to take him out. now he's gone and our old new enemies are etcetc

this isn't 1995, they don't have 40,000 pakistani troops helping them to take actual cities.

even if the army falls apart they'll just reemerge as 900 different ethnic militias with varying levels of indemnity for the taliban

The Taliban were never based on the traditional tribal structure of the Soviet-era mujahideen, they were ethnic pashtun but that's it. They will almost certainly re-take control of Afghanistan, and their Pakistani counterparts are more powerful than ever.

Insofar as there is an ethnic or tribal struggle it will be between Taliban Pashtun and anti-Taliban Pashtun, with the Hazaras trying to stay out of it.

tehrek-i taliban is currently a mess, massud is dead, they have figures defecting to ISIL and they're currently being hammered by the pakistani military. they're in no position to help anybody

it's unlikely the taliban can hold territory where there isn't a pashtun majority, that's literally over 60% of the country. there's no alqueda this time and the pakistani military isn't going to deploy thousands of troops to help the taliban capture kabul like they did in 96. the current situation will likely continue until the government or army collapses and you have a 90s free for all type civil war.

unless the next mullah omar is simultaneously pashtun tajik hazara uzbek and turkmen there's always going to be conflict in afghanistan, that strongman dictator poo poo won't work in a country that is like 70% minorities who are all armed and hate each other but hate the largest group (pashtuns) the most

Idk running around to a bunch of different poles with plates spinning on them trying to keep everything balanced and spinning constantly because if you let one alone for even a couple seconds it'll topple to the ground and shatter seems like it's just slow inevitable failure.

The Taliban fought the most powerful and expensive military on Earth the whole time, are still there, and will retake control of the country, and are stronger than before in a neighboring country.

The "but we killed more guyz!" whine is at least as old as Vietnam, but failure is timeless.

The US military tried to introduce their superior culture of vodka and red bull while raping fellow soldiers, but it didn't take due to the inferior mud people culture of Afghanistan.

LOL, the government in Islamabad was just negotiating a cease fire with them, which TTP pulled out of because they didn't see any benefit. Aside from entering into top-level negotiations with the government, they've also never controlled more territory. If your idea of "getting hammered" is being more powerful that at any time in your history then they are certainly getting hammered.

By "defecting to ISIL" do you mean that TTP members are flying to Syria to observe or participate in another 'jihadist" war in a difference theater? There is no shortage of manpower in Waziristan.

AQ? They were wiped out in the first months of the invasion (the only success of the entire war) and the Taliban went on to fight the US for over a decade. AQ doesn't contribute anything except money, which the Taliban doesn't even need because they are selling opium again since the US invasion.

But hey, maybe you are right. We'll see soon enough.
