Howdy, so I'm a digital Proctor, I have been for a while now, it's a new job in a new field that most people probably have never thought about, let alone been apart of! It's fast growing field of questionable privacy invasion that's going to be sweeping the nation, and is snapping up institutions and accreditations like crazy. I watch people take exams over the internet. By that I mean they download a third party program allowing me to connect with their computer while they sit on a webpage that works a lot like tinychat, which allows me to control it remotely, then I close down any programs that could be used to cheat, (Dropbox, Skydrive, Bittorent, Skype, etc. etc.) and ask to see their rooms. Then I have them give their monitor and room a once over with the webcam, take them to their exam, and use a private password set-up by the institution to get them in. There is a ton of variations on that depending on the institution, teacher, and what systems are up or down that day. This is mostly a thing because schools need to be accredited, in order to keep that they have to prove their students are taking their exams securely. You can't really do that over the internet until recently, when computers, bandwidth, and widespread of the internet has made education more obtainable. Computers can't really tell who is whispering passwords in your ear, or when you're taking pictures of your exam with your phone. So that's where we come in. Now for the titular story, and possibly more as I think of them. I watch people take exam a lot, I normally have 7 or 8 people up on my screen, and unless I'm maxed out I'm probably, getting more into their exams. You're a test taker, you've read and agreed to the rules that said in all caps NO BATHROOM BREAKS ARE ALLOWED DURING THE EXAM, but you have to go RIGHT NOW! What do you do? Do you tell your Proctor it's an emergency? Do you bitch a lot? Do you take the laptop to the bathroom and drop trow making me stare at your flaccid dick and moan loudly like a loving retard? A large majority (As in 2 - 3 a week,) do the last one. It's ridiculous how many dudes want to show their dicks to people. Normally goony assholes too. There are a few stories, but some pretty weird people use Online Schools, and I get to peak into the peak reddit / weirdo. So please go ahead and ask questions, it'll help jog my memory of which story to tell first.

Wouldn't it be pretty easy for them to have some hidden means of cheating still? Like some kind of cheat sheet in an easily accessible place that they pull out after they do the once over with their web cam? Why can't these institutions use those testing centers where people go to take secure computer tests?

I could be leaving huge parts of the process out, because it's a lot of stuff, locking the workspace alone is a 20 step process that I've kind of glossed over, and again we're watching your screen, your room, and your face at the same time. The program we have allows us to see your simulated desktop, the positioning of the webcam has to be in a certain way. We have to see and hear before we'll even let you start your exam, we check the processes for keyloggers, and most of our software is third party security stuff. There is only how much I can say, but we even change up the start up process so that they can't use recording to try and fool us, and will immediately invalidate the exam in case of another remote control program being on before hand, or being connected mid exam. We regularly interrupt the exam and do checks for things like remote controlling of mice, and tons more. It's pretty involved, but we do go through care to make sure the Test Taker is clear on what's going on. At any point we can take control, and if you disconnect we file an IR. The program lets you know if the program is disconnected.

I think i must be missing something because like the others, to me, this sounds incredibly easy to cheat at. I'm not criticising, I'm honestly just confused. So you say you make the guy walk around the room holding the webcam so you can see stuff, make sure nothing useful is out, and from then on you can watch that feed as well as the screen monitoring feed... Well what's to stop the guy just hanging a cheat sheet underneath the webcam? Sorry if that's a stupid question, but that was my first thought.

Anyone with a passing knowledge of networking can make a Cisco router mirror everything going through one port out another.. think of it like a keylogger but it's just a stream of everything that goes in or out. Computer science certification? That doesn't sound like a degree. Doctorates.. who does exams at that level of postgrad? Which 'schools' do you do this for? This all sounds very University of Phoenix.

My Average Test Taker is like 40.

So if their connection goes out for a few moments you have to press a button and automatically fail them? And I'm guessing it takes a long rear end time to set up each and every individual? How is one lovely webcam that the person has to buy able to see so much?

No we can't fail them, but we send a notice to their teacher, "Hey feed cut out between answers 3 to 5, so those were un-proctored."

What's to stop someone from say, taking a test in their bedroom, and i know the way my room is laid out, since I have the "guest" bathroom, someone can come through the bathroom into my room, and if I'm on my bed, with the webcam pointed at me and the computer it won't see someone coming in in front of the laptop to hang a cheat sheet. Or in the same scenario, a guy getting up to take a piss, with the cheat sheet posted in the bathroom somewhere? In something that's not about cheating, ever see anything just really wild? Or stupid? IE a guy leaving out like massive amounts of drugs and paraphanelia that makes it really obvious he's dealing? Someone who enjoys taking online classes because of the ability to do everything (including testing) in the buff?

I don't think the point is to find an un-cheatable system, it's just to try and prevent cheating (and the system described here seems to do this). It's possible to cheat in person, in fact, it sounds like it might be easier in person than with this system. It's probably more dependent on proctor/student ratio, and in a lecture hall with 50-200 people that ratio would be like 50:1, as opposed to here, 8:1. It'd actually be easier to catch cheaters here. How do the students know you're male or female? You're not on a webcam, are you? Just via voice? The guys who get their jollies off appearing naked and taking a poo poo or whatever, don't they get their jollies from seeing your reaction? I'm confused. Maybe I'm not perverted enough.

A similar example: Security guards don't catch all shoplifters, but the presence of a security guard lowers the attempts drastically. E: Also not every exam is closed to every material. Some exams allow book and notes, some allow just notes, some allow notes but only on a 3x5 notecard.
