The longlist for the 2014 Ballon d'Or has been announced so we can now all argue over who was the best player in the world for calendar year 2014.

The Nominees

Gareth Bale (Real Madrid)

Karim Benzema (Real Madrid)

Diego Costa (Atlético Madrid/Chelsea)

Thibaut Courtois (Atlético Madrid/Chelsea)

Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid)

Ángel Di María (Real Madrid/Manchester United)

Mario Götze (Bayern Munich)

Eden Hazard (Chelsea)

Zlatan Ibrahimovic (PSG)

Andrés Iniesta (Barcelona)

Toni Kroos (Bayern Munich/Real Madrid)

Philipp Lahm (Bayern Munich)

Javier Mascherano (Barcelona)

Lionel Messi (Barcelona)

Thomas Müller (Bayern Munich)

Manuel Neuer (Bayern Munich)

Neymar (Barcelona)

Paul Pogba (Juventus)

Sergio Ramos (Real Madrid)

Arjen Robben (Bayern Munich)

James Rodríguez (Monaco/Real Madrid)

Bastian Schweinsteiger (Bayern Munich)

Yaya Touré (Manchester City)

A few little stats for you:

code:

By league:

La Liga 10
Bundesliga 6
Premier League 5
Serie A 1
Ligue 1 1

By nationality:

Germany 6
Spain 3
Argentina 3
Belgium 2
France 2
Holland 1
Portugal 1
Wales 1
Colombia 1
Brazil 1
Ivory Coast 1
Sweden 1

Bu club:

Bayern Munich 6
Real Madrid 6
Barcelona 4
Chelsea 3
Manchester Pooshited 1
Juventus 1
Manchester City 1
PSG 1

So no good English lads or greasy Italians have even made the long list. Dear me.

Anyway discuss who you think should win; whether having a good World Cup matters; whether winning trophies is important to personal awards; how the state of modern football if hosed when 4 clubs apparently have 19 of the world's best 23 players etc.

if its not Ronaldo the whole thing is a sham, like when Sneijder didn't win it, and also when Suarez wasn't on the list this year, and also all the other times it was a retarded sham but i still care.

I feel this year it's more likely than ever to be someone other than Ronnie or Messi. Would like to see a german lad win it, but in my heart of hearts I just can't convince myself Lahm was the best player in the world last year.

Also I reckon Fabregas is a bit of an omission. Not surprised, but I will be if he's not on the list next year.

I'd look forward to a goalkeeper winning it

edit: and let's face it, if this were a schoolyard and you were a popular kid instead of a pathetic nerd, Neuer would be the first dude you'd pick for your team

Make a cool and good XI out of that list. Probably need to play Bale at LB because apparently the only good defenders this year are Ramos, Lahm (sometimes) and Mascherano (does he still play CB? Madness.)

Bit of a shame for Luis Suarez as he scored loads of goals in a proper league, singlehandedly beat a very strong England team in the World Cup and probably would have got about 20 goals in the wasteman league that is La Liga by now, if he hadn't bit that Italian fella on the shoulder.

And hell, he didn't even really bite him, he tripped and accidentally fell into him teeth first which was just plain bad luck
