Thermae Romae is pretty great if you're into naked Roman dudes and facts about bathhouses.

I tried watching welcome to the NHK because it supposedly involved depression and social isolation. Then in the third episode the protagonist turns into a literal child porn watching pedophile.

The dub of the HnK movie is bizarre. For some reason they decided to remove all of the great music and change the story. Although hearing those glorious ring modulated sfx in action is pretty nice

What, no serious posts of Attack on Titan yet? No sexualized underage girls, no sexualized male or female characters period, and female characters who are intelligent and competent without overcompensating or being dumbed down enough to make them palatable for insecure manbabies. Because of it I'm going to be watching anime after my birhday, as a 30-year-old woman, even though I thought I was too finally too old and tired of the pedophile pandering, creepy juvenile sexualizing bullshit to care about the genre any more.

RabbitWizard posted:And no story that leads somewhere. I seriously regretted watching this one. Sorry that happened to you! The season ended where it did because the manga's still going. There's been approximately 30 more chapters of story since the end point of the anime, that will be made into a second season, probably starting production some time next year. Though if a person doesn't like the "one question answered, 5 more appear" kind of storytelling, well, they won't like the rest of what's out so far. We're laughing in the manga thread because (spoilers about a resolution of a plotline from the first season) they still haven't gotten to the basement yet, nor do they have any clue what's in there, though maybe, just MAYBE, one of the latest developments might lead to the characters getting indirect access.

And besides gender equality, Attack on Titan is a really solid horror-themed action story mixed with kaiju scale battles. It's a really engaging and downright disturbing show with a really great cast and good action/special effects for the animation.

Does anyone know the reason why Japanese animators and artists feel the need to put scantily clad totally-not-minors-guys-wink-wink in so many different works? As contribution for the thread: Jiro Taniguchi makes very relaxing, very low-key manga series. His most popular is The Walking Man, which is very beautifully illustrated and is literally just about a guy enjoying walks around his town. But I personally prefer Kodoku no Gourmet, a guy who eats in various restaurants and comments on the food he eats and people he meets there.

I think I framed the question wrongly. What I meant to say is: how is it possible that it is a sound business decision to include sexualization of minors in someone's work? I sincerely doubt that Japan just happens to have so many more pedophiles than the average nation.

Yeah, being female, I'm sensitive to portrayal of female characters in fiction*, so even a sub-decent story with a good portrayal of female characters is a big deal when it shows up. It was almost unbelievable to me that a mainstream anime show could be really good and have well done female characters. What BottledBodhisvata said is the better description of why Attack on Titan is awesome. *i.e. "tired of the repetitive poo poo by now" paradoxGentleman posted:I think I framed the question wrongly. The conclusion I've come to is that the majority of the anime/manga industry has stories aimed at a child to preadolescent to college age demographic, and financially, the stories aimed at the teenage males do the best. Nudity and sexuality depicted in a sex-fantasy way are something that is permissible to do and have people look away or try not to notice, much like ultra power fantasy violence in media is ignored in United States.

Nudity and sexuality depicted in a sex-fantasy way are something that is permissible to do and have people look away or try not to notice, much like ultra power fantasy violence in media is ignored in United States. This is a big part of the puzzle. Also, Japan has a huge cultural fetish for youth (high school in particular) since adult working life in Japan is incredibly miserable and demanding, with so many companies demanding insanely long work hours. People look back on their high school years as the last chance they had to unwind, do things in their free time, and make friends before they ventured into the corporate meat grinder. I suspect that so many Japanese shows feature teenage protagonists or are set in high schools because a large amount of the audience is using them to vicariously relive opportunities they missed during high school. As for the sexualization of youth? Pederasty (wakashudo) was ingrained into the samurai tradition. This doesn't justify the sheer volume of creepy poo poo that comes out of anime, or why lolicon became a thing, but it's worth noting that it was a common practice up until the mid-1850s. ...I remember a post on a thread on SA somewhere which was a way, way better explanation of the Japanese obsession with youth but I can't find it.
