I tried watching welcome to the NHK because it supposedly involved depression and social isolation.

Then in the third episode the protagonist turns into a literal child porn watching pedophile.

What, no serious posts of Attack on Titan yet?

No sexualized underage girls, no sexualized male or female characters period, and female characters who are intelligent and competent without overcompensating or being dumbed down enough to make them palatable for insecure manbabies.

Because of it I'm going to be watching anime after my birhday, as a 30-year-old woman, even though I thought I was too finally too old and tired of the pedophile pandering, creepy juvenile sexualizing bullshit to care about the genre any more. :sigh:

Sorry that happened to you! The season ended where it did because the manga's still going. There's been approximately 30 more chapters of story since the end point of the anime, that will be made into a second season, probably starting production some time next year. Though if a person doesn't like the "one question answered, 5 more appear" kind of storytelling, well, they won't like the rest of what's out so far.

We're laughing in the manga thread because (spoilers about a resolution of a plotline from the first season)
they still haven't gotten to the basement yet, nor do they have any clue what's in there, though maybe, just MAYBE, one of the latest developments might lead to the characters getting indirect access. :v:

And besides gender equality, Attack on Titan is a really solid horror-themed action story mixed with kaiju scale battles. It's a really engaging and downright disturbing show with a really great cast and good action/special effects for the animation.

wheres the jester, I could do with some pointless nonsense right about now

Does anyone know the reason why Japanese animators and artists feel the need to put scantily clad totally-not-minors-guys-wink-wink in so many different works?

As contribution for the thread: Jiro Taniguchi makes very relaxing, very low-key manga series. His most popular is The Walking Man, which is very beautifully illustrated and is literally just about a guy enjoying walks around his town. But I personally prefer Kodoku no Gourmet, a guy who eats in various restaurants and comments on the food he eats and people he meets there.

Usually audience pandering. However, a surprising number of manga artists start out doing what amounts to bootleg anime porn, so the same content can often end up leaking into products even after that phase (see: Hellsing, where almost every character is from his earlier porn work).

The guy who writes hellsing is p weird, there's author's notes in the manga talking about how he once got really aroused watching a detergent ad.

I think I framed the question wrongly.
What I meant to say is: how is it possible that it is a sound business decision to include sexualization of minors in someone's work? I sincerely doubt that Japan just happens to have so many more pedophiles than the average nation.

Yeah, being female, I'm sensitive to portrayal of female characters in fiction*, so even a sub-decent story with a good portrayal of female characters is a big deal when it shows up. It was almost unbelievable to me that a mainstream anime show could be really good and have well done female characters. What BottledBodhisvata said is the better description of why Attack on Titan is awesome.

The conclusion I've come to is that the majority of the anime/manga industry has stories aimed at a child to preadolescent to college age demographic, and financially, the stories aimed at the teenage males do the best. Nudity and sexuality depicted in a sex-fantasy way are something that is permissible to do and have people look away or try not to notice, much like ultra power fantasy violence in media is ignored in United States.

This is a big part of the puzzle.

Also, Japan has a huge cultural fetish for youth (high school in particular) since adult working life in Japan is incredibly miserable and demanding, with so many companies demanding insanely long work hours. People look back on their high school years as the last chance they had to unwind, do things in their free time, and make friends before they ventured into the corporate meat grinder. I suspect that so many Japanese shows feature teenage protagonists or are set in high schools because a large amount of the audience is using them to vicariously relive opportunities they missed during high school.

As for the sexualization of youth? Pederasty (wakashudo) was ingrained into the samurai tradition. This doesn't justify the sheer volume of creepy poo poo that comes out of anime, or why lolicon became a thing, but it's worth noting that it was a common practice up until the mid-1850s.

...I remember a post on a thread on SA somewhere which was a way, way better explanation of the Japanese obsession with youth but I can't find it.

Also, what the hell is Moe?

Moe is the big problem I have with manga right now.

Basically, Japanese nerds are so loathed by society and have such low senses of self worth that they can't really imagine forming a bond of any sort with a normal woman, and even in their fantasies can't even imagine themselves rescuing a barbarian woman in a chainmail bikini or whatever it is that the American nerd's unhealthy view of women is. They still want to play a masculine role as a protector, though, so the standard for female protagonists has become the only thing less impotent than the Japanese nerd himself, or a child. Factor in that the anime style of making the expressive features like eyes really big tends to make anime characters look really young anyway and you get a standard where the ideal woman is a 6 year old girl.

It's not necessarily sexual, in the same way that furries aren't necessarily sexual, but of course it usually is.

It's really the huge big thing in Japan this last decade or so, and it's kind of one of those "pay homage to this or suffer huge sales losses" things when calculating demographics, so it's a big part of why anime is so loathed right now. The fact that there's good stuff that doesn't pander to pedophiles doesn't make it any less disrespectable.
