EarthBound is a good game. Mother 3 is okay but not as good. Talk about how EarthBound changed your life here. also, this is the best song in the game: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6qif0oZTxpA

Yeah no arguments here OP. Earthbound is very much the poo poo and I think a lot of American kids would be unironically better off if they had to play it as like part of kindergarten or something.

I loved Earthbound but I tried to play Mother 3, and I liked it and beat it, but I'm not sure what the hell the plot or anything was. Maybe my attention span has waned as an adult. Did my brother die? Why was I fighting him? What were those Magypsie things that just showed up all of a sudden? I didn't really get it. But Earthbound was very good, and I love that the game never really ends because you can "play" the ending.

Am I the only one who thinks that a heavy-handed message about the evils of capitalism and commercialism corrupting innocence is very poorly delivered by a video game?

Here's a Hot Gaming Tip for you: During the ending you can go to Happy Happy Village and the pink house that was formerly locked is now unlocked and you can go inside. There's a Mr. Saturn living in there and for some reason his window is extremely high off the ground. Check it out! edit: Heath fucked around with this message at 00:37 on Nov 1, 2014 |

I also heard there's a way to buy that house that's like a million dollars or whatever.

I always remembered that little pink building in Fourside that had a sign out on the front saying something like "Currently working on developing Earthbound 2." I always kept hoping Uncle at Nintendo posted:This sounds great. $7500. Not too difficult if you spend a lot of time grinding levels.

The trip through the final zone to Giygas will net you more than enough money to buy the house. It's on the easternmost side of Onett.

# ? Nov 1, 2014 00:28 |

Here's another one I discovered: If during the ending you go back to the Tenda village, the chief will return the Overcoming Shyness book to you. You can then return it to the Onett library. If you do, the librarian gives you a kiss, and this changes the dialog of the blonde lady just outside of the library. Try it!

I like Mother 3 better because it has more of an actual story. Unfortunately the backstory is hastily told at the near end of the game, but still. Also, I love the bittersweet ending of Mother 3. It's implied that Nowhere Islands are the last spot on earth for humanity to populate after the rest of the world was destroyed. It's kind of a sad but happy ending for all of mankind.

Mother 3 was kind of disappointing but the fact that they gave a regular bat enemy their own unique battle theme that was a riff on the 60s Batman theme song was pretty great https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ot_lrkT33EY

Also Nintendo deprived US players by providing a guide with the game. I bought Earthbound used for $15 bucks and you don't need a loving guide to beat it in a decent amount of time. There are even in game hints for crying out loud. If you can't figure out how to beat Giygas by your third attempt without a guide Pokey flat out tells you how you should be executed.

A non-licensed Hot EarthBound Tip: You know those mummies at the Summers museum? If you manage to avoid and not fight them on your first visit there, you can come back during the ending and try to fight them. The game will freeze, as there's no more battle data stored for the game in the ending sequence!

There are a lot of games that have good stories. But EarthBound is really the first video game that I would say was a good story, in the form of a game, rather than just a game with a good story.

It took me 15 years to discover that dialog.

Apparently the ending sequence for Mother 3 was originally much darker, and featured no dialogue whatsoever. I suppose those BG sprites would convey the mood of the fight as it progresses. The unused sprites for cyborg Claus are pretty interesting. I wonder if the red X on his forehead and the one that repeats in one of the unused backgrounds have a connection?

I really wonder who looked at a colorful, comparatively non-linear JRPG with a modern-day American setting and a lighthearted plot about the power friendship and decided that the sequel needed to be a dark and depressing linear game set in rural Japan with a story about the evils of technology and foreigners https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0onpcfEh5L0
