As far as boss fights go he's pretty average, but his whole premise is just awesome and really original. His introduction is sweet, and his death animation is the best in the game.

Kojira in Destroy All Humans 2 was a great boss fight. She gained health by destroying buildings, so you could gain the upperhand in the fight by levelling Tokyo first, or try to fight her without causing collateral damage so the military would side with you against her.

For all its issues the boss fights in MGS4 were generally loving amazing. Rex vs Ray I thought couldn't be topped till the actual finale with Snake and Ocelot beating the poo poo out of each other with styles going through all four games. It's just an absolutely perfect capstone. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ub-6sKfGSmw

Edit: What's great in Revengence is that for how much as people made "Nanomachines" a meme because of MGS4 they just said gently caress it and ran even harder with it and it worked. The final boss in MGR:R is literally swole Dick Cheney who's pacemaker uses nanomachines to make his skin almost indestructible. It's brilliant.

I actually had no idea you had to shoot Dirge's eyes until a kid at my elementary school told me. Back then, I rarely went on the internet because all I had was lovely dial-up (couldn't even watch youtube videos) so I had no idea what any of the colossi looked like before I fought them. When I first saw Dirge, I was like "Oh sweet, a sand worm. I wonder how you're supposed to get on that-OH GOD RUN AGRO."

Dirge was a nice surprise but so was Malus. The elementary school classmate told me that the final boss was basically a mountain with its legs tied together. I imagined a giant tree-shaped rock that hopped around a green valley. Glad the game proved me wrong.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YO2I2kFORQo
The thing that surprised me the most about the fight was that the music never changed. Not that it's a bad thing, it fit the whole thing perfectly. The soundtrack in Shadow Of The Colossus is the best I've ever heard in a game.

Pelagia is also cool because he's the weirdest looking colossus.

Don`t fall asleep, you gotta write for THUNDERDOME

Marv and Harry, Home Alone for NES

Once every few years, I'll bust out this game for an hour or two with the intent to beat it. It can be beaten in 20 minutes flat, and all you have to do is stay away from those motherfuckers. Easy enough, right? I have never beaten it. I am 28 years old and have been playing this since I was probably 5 or 6. The two bumbling crooks are fiendishly fast (especially as the game progresses), and I am nearly convinced that there is no way to finish the game.

The Red Falcon, Contra for NES

The final boss is surprisingly easy for a game this hard (especially if you destroy some of the spider-spewing pod things), but drat, that design is unforgettable. The heart pumps faster and faster the more damage it takes, which is rad as hell.

The Cyberdemon, Doom

Those of you who have played this game (it should be all of you, dammit) know that this guy isn't as hard as he looks to be - he's actually harder.

Phantom Ganon, Ocarina of Time

As good or better than the actual Ganondorf battle, for a few reasons. For one, it comes at the end of one of the best dungeons in the game. Also, he's riding a dead phantom horse into and out of the paintings in the wall, how loving cool is that?

Gwyn, Lord of Cinder, Dark Souls

Make no mistake, this guy is pretty tough. What makes this battle so poignant, though, is the story and atmosphere. You can piece together the background of this once noble old man if you are paying close attention throughout the game. You go into the final area expecting an all-out brawl and plenty of bombast, but what you get is an utterly depleted ceremonial guard leading up to the final encounter with a withered, deranged husk. The music that accompanies the battle is beautiful and really drives home what is happening. It's a really sad and desperate moment, and it was not what I was expecting. An unusual and fitting end to a great game.

The fight against Luca Blight is awesome just because oh how god drat much it takes to drop him. Battles with multiple parties with him getting shot all to hell in between, and the fucker just will not die. Really drives home what a threat he was and makes you feel as if your characters were idiots for trying to kill him and lucky to be alive afterward.

It's perfect. He really is the "Lord of Cinder." His fire is just but a few embers and that's all he is too. That music is near the best in the series next to Maiden Astraea's theme from Demons Souls.

I think it is compounded how badass he is if you are playing it the first time through, since you probably don't have 18 people relevantly trained for the fight if you don't know it is coming. You end up with a few of your strong dudes you were probably using (Flik, Viktor) actually being able to damage him and take a hit or two, but your first two parties will probably be torn apart. It really feels like an uphill battle against one dude (a dude that isn't magically enhanced or a secret god or something) and honestly the end of the fight sequence is really really unsatisfying but probably the only way your side would have won, which made it cool.

Luca Blight's easily the best part of an already great game. When you get to the end and the final bad guy is like "Now face the power of a True Rune!!!" I was just like, "Oh, thank gently caress it's not Luca again."

Although unexplained Zombie Luca Blight would've probably been a better final boss.
