Perhaps they can start a terror raid warning service? You could combine it with the weather report!

Australia's treatment of refugees is like watching a crippled, starving man beg for scraps at the table of a group of obese men, their table filled with every food imaginable. To watch the men get up from their chairs and slowly beat and torture the cripple to death, grins on their faces and grease on their chins. To hear their booming laughter and the man's screams. Nothing less than that.

Mithranderp posted:The problem is, they are an unelected ceremonial Head of State, and running around doing things "for the greater good" would be all well and good, but it's not democracy. Yeah, democracy is the torture, refouling and effective murder of refugees! It's what the people want!

Quantum Mechanic posted:So the alternative is to hand power over to the unelected representative of a person who came out of the correct vagina? I was simply saying that the current treatment of refugees is something that the vast majority of the Australian public is content with and we can see that from the broad support that the Labor and Liberal parties enjoy. If one approves of the Australian model of government then surely one must approve of what results from it, yes?

CrazyTolradi posted:Should we go back to having a Governor with complete powers, appointed by the Queen? Maybe we could set up our own monarchy, like that group out at Hutt River? We could even try having a military despot ruler, maybe that will be better? Or we could all go an-cap/liberatarian and abolish the state, clearly the free market would decide that treating refugees would be our best course of action, surely? Nah, I think democracy is probably the best choice, I'm just saying that it's also the choice of torture and death for refugees.

Some of it is justified because there are some deadset no-hopers out there but I really feel for the ones who are actually doing the hard yards and earning their degree. They should be mad at the university for slackening their standards and at the government for underfunding the universities and at their parents and elders for voting the bastards in.

Splode posted:Universities man. It's not racist at all when it's based on the fact that the person in question lacks a critical skill for completing the assignment, i.e. being able to communicate. It's also important to emphasize that this lack is absolutely not their fault, this is exactly why you have entrance exams but of course the universities are chasing the short term buck lest they be forced to cut back on programs and layoff staff. But all of this can be laid at the feet of an incompetent and destructive government with a sense of foresight that doesn't extend past their noses, but at least they're honest about it: Tony Abbott posted:'I'm focusing not on what might happen in 16 years' time.' Nothing will happen to Morrison, the worst he will see is a cushy retirement. He will never face justice for what he has wrought. Justice is a tool of the powerful, not of the weak.

Mithranderp posted:I (relatively) recently learned about the history behind all the "Boundary Road"s in Brisbane, i.e. that they represented the boundary which indigenous people were not allowed to cross after a certain time. I'm assuming that similar poo poo happened in other towns/cities. While that definitely doesn't represent the WORST of our appalling treatment of our first people, it's certainly shameful to think about. Part of me would like to see a name change (idk what to, but something that maybe wasn't used to exclude people from their own loving ancestral land) but then again the only reason I even know about the curfew thing is because I was like "boundary? boundary of what?" and googled that poo poo, so in a way, changing the names of those roads could be a form of whitewashing the past and pretending that we didn't do poo poo like that. Change the name but put up a monument to the victims of such policies on the side of the road that includes a plaque detailing the history of the road and what it's old name represented.
