They handled that storyline REALLY badly but the idea was that the Board of Directors felt that their Chairman was getting too personally involved in the on-air product to the detriment of the company, so they decided to basically force his hand and make him come back to the boardroom and run things from his office, and make COO Triple H the new guy responsible for managing the wrestlers. All of this is kayfabe, of course. It was handled really badly in that most people just assumed,"The Board of Directors says you're done" meant that Vince was somehow fired from the company he owns the majority stock in.
