its actually economical and reaosnable to get inkjet refilled over toner. toner that has enough iron in it ends up costing almost as much (or more) than oem - presuming you dont buy it at office depot

My dad was 71 years old when he got his first computer. I set him up, showed him the basics and left him to his own devices. One day he called me and said, "Can you come over? I hear bluegrass music coming from the computer and it's driving us crazy. There's nothing on the screen but the music just won't stop."

I drove over and sure enough, bluegrass music was blaring out of their computer. Turns out that he had opened the same bluegrass video like 37 times and instead of closing the window, only minimized it. Then he couldn't find it and he'd open up another window and so on. I ended up just shooting him in the head. Much easier than explaining the problem to him.

there are some old people who decide that since they've survived long enough they aren't required to figure out anything ever again. not just computers, but anything new that requires learning or thought, no matter how little.

like at my pharmacy you used to have to sign for your prescriptions on a paper sign-in sheet. about a year ago they replaced it with a system where you tap OK on the credit card terminal and sign your name on the terminal screen. even with a year to learn the system, i still find myself in line behind some old gently caress who can't figure it out, even after the pharmacist EXPLAINS THE TWO WHOLE STEPS required to do it. Our department at work recently went fully computerized.

Of the 4 people over the age of 50 working there, three retired and one changed department as soon as they heard computers were showing up. There are a few 40+ year olds that stayed, and they had more than a year to get their poo poo together. Now that were live I make sure to point out as much as possible the fact that none of them got their poo poo together and paw at the computer with less skill than my niece in grade school. One was particularly head-up-her-rear end defiant and claimed that computers weren't really that important, but she got shut-up right quick when she learned any new positions opening up in the department or further advancement in her career would require computer skills well beyond what she currently possessed.

EDIT: Oh, we also recently got a memo for everyone to make sure their email was in order, backed up properly, as they were switching out servers and upgrading mail clients and back-end software. I come in to work the next day to the co-supervisor standing besided a foot-high stack of paper. "They said to back up our email, so I'm printing it all out for safe keeping!"

as someone who currently works as helpdesk, you get a wildly warped view of the average user. you only get the calls from the loving retards who can't figure it out. every call you don't get from 80% of the users who are trying, they googled it themselves and didn't call you. the people who keep calling you and getting malware infections and they can't restore the file they accidentally deleted, they are there by sheer force of inertia.

working helpdesk is not an accurate view of computer competence among the general population imo

The only reason these old assholes haven't learned how to use a computer is because they are reluctant. I can guarantee they haven't been sincerely trying to learn for any amount of time. They wear their technology ignorance as a badge of honor almost, and it's disgusting. My mother was technology illiterate for years and years and then all of a sudden within a span of 6 months she went from not knowing how to copy paste to being constantly connected on her phone and computer. She uses social media more than I do. Why did this happen? Because she suddenly gave a poo poo and decided to learn.

Get your poo poo together old people. It takes mere weeks or months and you'll stop annoying the rest of the world who needs to constantly help you google poo poo.

My dad is 69 and has been computer-literate since '79/'80 when he brought home our first computer (TI-99/4A). Mom, dad and I actually spent time as a family typing in lines for TI-BASIC programs that we got from magazines and then playing the game afterward...lol. Then, in the DOS days, my dad was really into computers and was a go-to for a lot of people we knew if they needed help with something. I remember him dialing into work in the mid-80s to transfer files, getting on Prodigy and various BBSs in the late-80s and getting our first internet line in '93 or '94., etc. Whenever I'd hear people his age at the time go all anti-computer or talk about how hard they were, I'd think "what a loving retard". Today, he is still using computers, albeit Windows 8-powered, but I still hear people his age talk about them like they are magic-powered mystery boxes.

Today, I teach at a school where most of the staff in 2014 still have trouble working computers. These are people ranging from 20+ years older than me to about 15 years younger. I thought it was crazy in the 80s when my dad was my age, now it just seems completely ludicrous that people can't use them. We were just issued iPads and wow....some of the questions people were asking in a mandatory training session were just bizarre. I was waiting for the IT guy's head to explode Scanners-style.

Microsoft Office is actually generally what you want. There are still HR departments that will auto reject any resume without it even ones for server IT positions where there is no way you don't know how to use word and excel at a user level, and wont be trouble shooting anything so it doesn't make too much sense other then filters to put it on there.

Mavis Beacon taught me poo poo. I did hunt and peck until I played a ton of starcraft on Battle.net. One day I suddenly started to touch type. I over reach on several characters. I hit v with my right index and y with my left index and I have no idea why but gently caress it I still get over 100WPM, which doesn't matter at all unless you are transcribing something.
