This card always annoys me so much. It always trips me up because I don't stay engaged with Black Riders due to my play style. I sometimes wish to interpret it as being able to fulfil the first part of the treachery (return a Black Rider engaged with you) by doing nothing if you don't have one engaged. Like you can either choose to do X or Y; you choose X and oh I have no engaged Black Riders. But I know this is wrong. Play A Test of Will, Pay with Eleanor.

You can't be loving serious. Goddamn I hate this encounter deck. I should never have sent Eleanor to hide the first time, but I thought we would be in the clear. I WILL fail my hide test, and Pippin will die and I will have some black riders on me attacking. Fuuuck. What's the order here, Rarity does there check last, so at most I would only get one Black Rider attacking me. Since I won't be hiding first, uh, maybe if someone is able to fight them could ignore hiding to take it on. I'll bring back Pippin when I have the resources. I don't really know what's the best course of action.

I really don't know. I'm 'last player' I think, I can probably successfully hide but then just have to chump-block with the ship captain and pray I get something to handle the black rider. And if I fail the check, what happens? Every black rider slaps me, just one, what?

If there are no Black Riders in the staging area, no penalty for failing the hide, other than Pippin's untimely death.

So if someone else fails a hide test and pulls the Black Rider in the staging area can I purposefully throw my hide test and just be left with the Black Rider I'm already engaged with? Cause if so CirclMaster can flunk his test too, chump block his rider and then we should be able to take both of them down. I think.

Yeah, you could just let the hide test fail so long as you can handle the black rider attacking twice. Once for the hide test fail and once during the combat phase.

Hope everyone had a happy holiday. My advice would be to attempt the hide test. During combat, your eagle should, in theory, be able to survive an attack, assuming no bad shadow cards. Then, you could use Mr Underhill to cancel the other attack. Hopefully then you can muster enough attack to kill one of the riders.
