With the exception of the two goals, Toronto did not look bad there.

I feel like overcoaching contributed a little to the second goal. Carlyle puts out the Kadri line as a reward for the goal but doesn't trust Kadri/Panik in the defensive end, so he loads up a new D pairing with Phaneuf/Polak who don't normally play together. Polak does his chasing the puck everywhere thing and Phaneuf gets confused as to where he's going to end up.

Notwithstanding Polak's continued defensive screwups, for crying out loud Kadri needs to learn how to take a faceoff. It's getting rather disconcerting that the guy just isn't getting any better at it.

Kadri is 46% on the year, Bozak is 55%. The difference from a coin flip is around 2-3 won/lost per game out of ~25 each. It's not significant, it's just narrative, stop listening to the CBC talking heads that agree with Carlyle's nonsense.

This seems like a good observation.

Thanks, I wish the announcing team was astute enough to notice that Phaneuf/Polak isn't a normal pairing and, you know, mention it on air but oh well.

It shouldn't even be an issue but for the fact that Polak isn't the defensive rock that Carlyle desperately wants him to be.

I personally love the fact that the Leafs don't pressure the other teams zone entries at all. Makes for exciting hockey.

Oh hey Clarkson has the cage gone and he still can't loving pass, who would have guessed.

AegisP posted:

Fair enough. Just keep hearing recent games of a string of him not winning faceoffs, which maybe made it sound worse than it was.

They mention it because it's a little note in their pregame sheets, so when Kadri loses a faceoff they can say "there you go" and when he wins one they can go "he normally loses those!" Either way they reinforce their talking point without having to do any analysis, like asking "what's the difference between him and the next guy?" Or " how much does a faceoff matter?"

Once you understand how those jobs work it becomes a lot more tedious to listen to, because you can see them cherry pick what they wanted to talk about before the game even started and see them ignore more significant things.

I remember a Habs game where the 'theme' that they wanted to push was 'Carey Price shaky' and so even after he stood on his head all night they would still yap on about how he struggled to make a save or handled the puck nervously or whatever. Just one example of many where the announcers have a story they want to tell no matter how the game actually goes.

They just went over the Rangers third goal and since the narrative is that Jake Gardiner doesn't try hard enough it's now his job to make it easy for the 37 year old veteran that the Leafs just signed to stabilize their D, and not said veteran's job to not lob pucks in front of his goalie under pressure.

It's not even that Gardiner doesn't deserve criticism, it's how heavily they land on one side of a 50/50 play because they can't contain themselves when it comes time to talk about their game sheets.

Levitate posted:

Yeah Robidas hosed that up. Bad pass and then he just circles around and doesn't pick up the wide open guy in front of hte net

Worst part is you can see that nobody on the Leafs feels that way. Robidas is giving Gardiner the death stare the whole way to the bench, then you can see Horacek talking to Gardiner after the play and Robidas isn't even listening. Gardiner's probably going to get benched next game for Percy and everyone will think it's justified.

Holland is good offensively. Someone twittered that he's on a 45-point-pace in games where he's given 13+ minutes. Other side of the puck, though...

Yeah, it's a problem. He's basically what people think Kadri is.

Also the fourth line has played two shifts in this third period, which is crazy for Carlyle. It also might be the worst fourth line the Leafs have iced all year, which might have something to do with that.
