There is no atmosphere on the comet so no need for a crane really (not that it really matters). They did have fancy rear end harpoons and poo poo which stick the landing and measure soil hardness. EDIT: Also the skycrane was for the huge size of the MSL versus the relatively tiny and low grav lander on the comet.
