This is a fun game and a surprisingly good port. Not really expecting quality releases from Sega these days but there you have it.

Meanwhile, as far as the writing goes... look, I'm just going to quote Eurogamer here, and if this doesn't sound amazing to you then 1) I don't think this is going to be The Game For You and 2) I think you may want to get your ability to sense fun examined:quote:And yet the game is also nuts. I mean, it's just barmy. Valkyria Chronicles remains an excellent tactical wargame with all the finest traditions of squad selection and small-arms tactics, a rarity on any console and something that prefigured the new XCOM. Though that's not all it is. It's also chirpy, cheesy and downright daft. One moment you find the plot has weaved its way through a fantasy interpretation of World War II to suddenly present you with a sombre labour camp and the game's analogy for national anti-Semitism. Then, your sergeant is suddenly yelling at you about his love for vegetables, and with good reason, since his spontaneous passion for potatoes has just granted him special powers. The translation is still a bit stiffer in places than I'd really like it to be (and, surprise, a pre-Persona 4 Japanese game had somewhat bad voice direction), but the heart of the game could survive through anything short of Google Translate.

SpaceDrake posted:This should also be emphasized - the system requirements on the Steam Store page are a joke. I'm convinced this will run on a good single-core machine and any DirectX9-compatible graphics card. I actually wish I still owned my GeForce 6800, just for the sake of curiosity in seeing if the game would run. It's been run on an 8600 at 30fps (though not 60) in 720p. You could probably get a playable framerate out of a loving first-gen DX9 card if you bumped down to 640x480. I'm running the game at 4k resolution and hitting 60fps no problem on equipment that was mid-range performance 3-5 years ago. It's awesome.

This is NOT VC2 and related bullshit to that. You guys are nuts if you think that VC1 is terrible plot/writing/characters. Dragon Age Inquisition might be more to your style as Polygon proclaimed that its writing is amazing. Here is some evidence. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oiJYrtbTYMY Oh, and yeah, snipers are fairly amazing once they are in the teen levels and have a good weapon and unlocked potential (Marina is quite a bit better then anyone else). Use them and have an engineer replenish their ammo. Edit 2: God drat steam thread and people keeping asking about Welkin and sister. oblomov fucked around with this message at 20:16 on Nov 13, 2014 |

I just started the game and while the gameplay looks great and I actually do like the art style, the writing and timing of the scenes is confusing. Like, immediately after the prologue battle, Alicia says she has stuff to do, and is next seen...bringing day old bread to Welkin in his home? Isn't she supposed to be rallying the town watchmen or moving civilians to shelters or something?

Saw it wasn't mentioned in the OP, but when Stormtroopers hit Elite level the T-MAG line of machine guns also opens up to make. Their gimmick is that they have a higher clip capacity, and actually start to outpace the Mags M line in total damage after a few upgrades.

Slap one of the Orders that add to their armour damage, and at close ranges they can closely match your Lancers in terms of damage, while being more versatile. And personality-wise, Largo and Jann are the only Lancers worth taking anyway.

So I take it this is kinda like Fire Emblem crossed with Front Mission (plus concentration camps inexplicably thrown in for funsies)? Haven't played a console since ye olde ps2 days so I've never even heard of the series before. I would throw so much money at a decent Front Mission game for PC, drat.

Ultimate Anti-Armor Boost which activates 100% of the time she is selected e. Also speaking of potentials, if you want your troops to get their best personal boosts, then do the first skirmish you unlock, the Outskirts of Bruhl I think it is, then whichever troop you want to 'level up' have them teamkill at least three other people with a grenade, have the teamkiller call a medic for them, then just have Alicia charge the main camp and capture it. Afterwards, talk to Ellet in Headquarters and they should get it. Eventually. I forget the specifics but it also unlocks more of that character's bio. The closest analogy I can think of is anime XCOM, except without the base management and you've got to line up your shots instead of praying the RNG doesn't hate you.

Is there some sort of bandoleer I can buy for my snipers so they carry more than 3 bullets on their person? It's a minor gripe I have with those guys aside from being terrible shots in the early game. I got a sort of Jagged Alliance style vibe from how your soldiers like or dislike one another which makes me wish this game was way more in depth about that.

run into them with an engineer. some also get perks for more bullets. also making them retreat and redeploy is a fast way to give them ammo and move them up. there is a bit of depth with likes and such. if 2 people who like each other are next to each other they both fire and some get buffs or debuffs from others

The "Now Loading" screen can't even finish writing the word "Loading" and my computer's dead silent while running the game. So, about that mission where you have to blow up the gigantic tank. That part's easy enough, but what am I supposed to do about the invincible anime girl that instantly kills whomever she wants? My tank can only act as a shield so well.

Yeah, VC is basically "If you fire, your bullets will all end up in this circle. Get the circle filled with bad guy? Every shot will hit. Plus it even tells you exactly how many times you need to shoot a guy to kill him, and it even changes when pointed at their heads, so you even know for sure if you've lined up a headshot or not.

Is there any risk of screwing myself over by picking bad team members and then being stuck with them because the people I didn't use are too low level to catch up? I just got dumped into the team-building part and now I'm staring at this list of names, paralysed with indecision. I'm definitely taking Vyse and Aika though, I mean come on there's no way I'm not taking those guys with me on an adventure

You level up entire classes rather than specific individuals so you should be ok.

Apparently they knew it was a ridiculous mission, but it was also my fault for taking two snipers along. At least they cleared that mountain top early on without fuss. Still, I got everyone out safely. No anime left behind!
