Jonny 290 posted:librarians are badasses and we should keep libraries around just for their sake Librarians are legit awesome, a few years ago I was needing to do some historical research on something weird (A 100+ year old church for a zoning case) and the librarians were insanely helpful, I didn't even know where to start but within like an hour she was helping me make printouts from a 100 year old newspaper on microfilm. And I think they get really excited to help a clean polite person doing legitimate research and not a filthy homeless acting like they are their servants.

Yeah libraries are good they are like somebody printed out 0.00000001% of the internet and put it in a building, which is much better than the entire internet I can access at home for many reasons that I can't really think of right now Also apparently you can use them to gain access to 0.0001% of the movies and TV shows in the world which is also way better than the 95% of them I can access at home. But the real selling point is the homeless people jizz vvv you can actually read books online too vvv yeah too bad we won't remember reading that, I guess because studies have shown oh poo poo I forgot what we were talking about but good point Tujague fucked around with this message at 21:40 on Nov 16, 2014 |

no point in reading books since you can easily look up facts and wikipedia articles online. This sort of overlooks how they a did a study which found that finding facts using Google search actually caused the brain to forget the information in terms of long term memory recollection. Basically the brain deicides why put the information or story into short term memory when it can be easily looked up at a later date? http://www.mercurynews.com/ci_18478827 etalian fucked around with this message at 21:39 on Nov 16, 2014 |

Whenever I visit a library I end up spending time reading books on completely random things. Like a directory of really bad cars, a book about managing food inventory at restaurants, a history of the Popes (and anti-Popes), military combat skills and techniques, a book about this Swiss graphics/package designer, stuff like that. It's sort of like Wikipedia but with paper.

I guess the duey decimal system is harder than i thought. It's not that much school, it's literally just a four-year-degree in anything at all, followed by 1 or 2 years to get a Master's in Library Science. If you really want to look good for your resume then you can also get a second Master's in Whatever which would take another two years. But at most we're talking 5-6 years which is standard Good College Education time. The only way you'd get away with less is if you get a BA in something marketable or two years to get a certificate in something.
