I've started trolling people by telling them they need to upgrade their ships with the outboard motor DLC promo code. I'm laughing, anyway!

Point them to the reconstructed Lynx, it has one. Tell them it was painstakingly reconstructed based on the plans in England when they took it apart after capturing it, so it must be true.

My folks have a sailboat that they keep on the Kanawha river and they end up using the outboard a lot. Still waaaay more fuel efficient than the powerboat we used to have.

HEY GUYS I'VE FLOWN HELICOPTERS IN THIS GAME BEFORE AND I AM AN EXPERT. ALSO, HOW DO I START THE ENGINE?
This game is about shooting other boats, and it is drat fine at that. The battle part of this game is pretty good so far, the only disappointment is that to take an enemy mast down, you need to do over 900pts of damage to it, which is equivalent to 30 24lb shots hitting the same section of mast. The bigger ships look really fun, fought a constitution with 3 brigs, and we nearly drat got him, but lost due to running into the invisible wall and having to tack upwind.

What kind of guns are you equipping on your ships? Carronades only for the sweet drive by action? I generally do 6lb long guns on the Brig, Will most likely do long guns on other ships as well because I prefer to stay away unless I have the tonnage advantage.

The Devs posted that the gun ranges/damage aren't in yet, although the carronades work correctly. So long or short doesn't matter yet.

I've found that I like hitting a few long shots, then switching to chain at medium range. Then I load double, get close, and unload. Some of that is part of the metagame at the moment, since damage is king, and since I don't have to pay for any sort of repair.

Yeah but you have to get CLOSE (IE my guns are poking your guns) if you want to do a double shot with 18lb carronades and actually hit. People are usually smart enough not to let you get right next to them, and its rather annoying when you don't get any shots off because of it.

I do encourage ramming though, I pushed a Constitution for 5 minutes just laughing the entire time. It also fucks up their turning and can be a game winner if you have others who can get in position to take advantage of the situation.

How on earth do you switch out different guns on your ship?

How many ships are currently in the game and how do you acquire more? Is there a "tech tree" like in WoT and the like or can you just build anything want?

3 Action Economist
May 22, 2002

Educate. Agitate. Liberate.
Right now there are 10, and you progress up through the line by doing damage in the previous ship. I'm sure there will be a much truer tech "tree" once it's not in alpha, and it'll make sense. For now this works though.

E: I should probably list the 10 -

Yacht, Lynx, Cutter, Brig, Surprise, Trincomalee, Constitution, Bellona, BrigMR, Victory.

I'm not sure what BrigMR is.

That actually . . works? It looked unimplemented. Especially since most of the slots just seem stuck on "empty".

They're empty if you don't have those decks.

Since the gun damage and range charts aren't really in place, though, it makes little difference.

Maybe I'm just a pessimist but I have a sneaking suspicion that this game will be a lobby brawler for eternity and they'll be working on the amazing open world in the same way that Mechwarrior Online works on Community Warfare.

Is there anything to suggest otherwise?

Other than promises and forum posts by the devs, I suppose not.

But even so, it's worth the price.

I had the same thought. I think if that worries you don't buy in, same as with Mechwarrior -- it's fun now and worth playing now but don't ride on promises.

I talked to a developer who was playing and they said that different kinds of guns are actually implemented, so a 6lb does different damage and different ranges than a 12lber, etc.

Loading up your brig with 18lb. carronades and ramming everything in sight in PvE seems to be a decent way to level towards a Surprise, though if you don't have the weather-gage it's painful so I'm having to learn how to tack. Averaging around 1600-1800 damage per game and usually getting most of the kills. Small ships die really fast and with the big ships you can often ram them up underneath their guns and then just blast away without getting hit in return.

Oh it's gonna happen one way or the other, pal.

So are any ships sidegrades or is the next one up clearly superior?

They always have more guns, less maneuverability. A ship one or two tiers below another can still win, it just takes a lot more finesse and determination.

The only exception seems to be the Mortar Brig which is after the bellona and before the victory, which is a brig that has long range (explosive?) shells that can pound targets and take them out quickly.

So the in game surprise model is all wrong. It has two gun decks! And the chasers aren't even brass! WTF??

Is there any reason to not load up your ship with the longest, heaviest cannon you can?

Just had a neat fight where it was me in Suprise, with another player in the Victory, vs. a bunch of Trincomalees. I shot all the Trinc's sails full of holes with chain shot so they couldn't envelop the Victory and the Victory killed them one by one. It worked really well.

My brother has a block of wood they took out of the Constitution during the 1970's restoration. So jealous.

Maybe now would be a good time to read Six Frigates. I've had it on my shelf for a few years now but every time I want to read it, I've just finished Aubrey/Maturin, and it's weird to shift allegiances so fast as it were.

That link seems to work, thanks!
I also haven't been to see Mary Rose since she was closed up in a huge hangar being sprayed with salt water 24/7 and all you could see was the rough shaped of lumps of wood through the mist. Apparently she looks good now. Really must get down to the docks at some point.

The game I really want out of this is like Silent Hunter 3 or 4 but with sails. Convoy escorts, carrying messages, cruises, etc, with provision management, prizes, promotions, and the odd fleet action to spice things up.
