Cool it a minute, babe, let me finish playing with my fake gun.
I bought the game before New Years, just got my key today, was really excited to play . . . and it doesn't work. I get this little message:
"Game required shader model is 5. Your shader model is 4."

Any idea what that is? I've never run across a "shader model" in my life.

The good news is, if it's a problem with my hardware, I got some money set aside from Christmas to spend on video cards and such.

It means you need DirectX 11, which means you need a new videocard, most like.

Me and another dude both in Cutters where fighting 2 AI. He was fighting alongside I think a Brig at the time and got too close, somehow the Brig basically sucked his cutter in and it ended up flipping over and rolling underneath the brig like it was on magnets attached to the Brigs haul. Was one of the funniest things I've seen and it insta killed him.

I rolled a Brig in my Cutter once, it was awesome.

And then I promptly sank.

Heh, I just managed to completely dismast an opponent. Didn't even realize the game would let that happen. I saw the masts go down and thought it was sinking, but then realized I was still getting hit by his cannon and he was still there a few minutes later, so I had to sail into appropriate position and finish him off. Felt brutal.

Err nevermind it wasn't me, I just had almost the exact same thing happen though.

We somehow won the match, me sitting in my Cutter sans mast taking pot shots at a brig that was a hair outside my carronade range. Luckily the last guy on our team managed to finish off the enemy Snow and Brig.

When they first introduced that, it was way too easy to do. Probably realistic that way, but not fun.

If an entirely different game can deliver on PotBS' promise of hundred ship fleet PvP it'll be pretty hilarious. If it's good, anyway.

On another note, this game looks pretty good already.

I`m totally broke and in the process of moving to another country at the moment but I`ll be buying it as soon as I have some money spare.

Also, shanties. It is known, after ac4 no sail game can go without shanties.

I saw an Antiques Roadshow repeat on the weekend and they had a captured French signaling cannon on it.

Basically they would run up the communication flags, then fire the cannon as a "look this way shitheads" message.

Right now just death match. Open world is supposedly incoming, but not sure what form it'll take. I'm hoping (eventually) for a silent hunter style single player dynamic campaign.

I don't think it'll ever be a campaign, it'll be very ree form. It's online-only, after all.

We don't much, but there is some info on the Game Labs forums. They're starting with the Caribbean but will definitely be adding other spots later, probably Europe and then the Mediterranean.

No idea on sailing times, but we do know that they plan on letting merchants hire escorts, and should they be attacked, members of whatever faction they've hired can "teleport" in to assist (Or NPCs will spawn). See here for that discussion: http://forum.game-labs.net/index.php?/topic/2654-escort-system/

Ran into Phly Daily, 2v1, I was the 1. I almost sank him, but the other guy saved him by ramming me right as I was firing the coup de grace, so I missed. I lost but had just over 900 damage, they had about 400 total.

I then got treated to watching two frigates trading broadsides at point-blank range. Literally. They were touching each other, one boarded the other, both were listing horribly and one was taking on water. Still broadsiding. Eventually the enemy one sank, but the friendly one was totally crippled. I killed the last enemy yacht to win the game, though!

Yeah, the hands singing and dancing on the foc'sle was A Thing in the evening aboard ships in the Royal Navy, but most captains did not countenance work songs while working the capstan or scrubbing decks or anything like that. I think it wasn't considered professional enough.

Things were probably better with the French Republican Navy but they couldn't cope with the sheer amount of pounds sterling the British threw at them.

The biggest problem with the French Republican Navy is that they executed or cashiered almost all of their good officers, and a lot of terrible ones, and had poo poo leadership for years afterward. Well that, and a little too much democracy on the quarterdeck.

On top of that, Napoleon micromanaged the poo poo out of the Navy, which he also did with the Army but he actually knew what the gently caress he was doing with the Army. Dude had no sense of naval anything.

So you're only doing severe damage to a ship once the armor is depleted right?

Or is there a possibility of sinking a ship / getting a lucky hit even if their armor is still high

I guess I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around the concept of 'armor' in wooden ships... really it's just knocking out all the massive timbers that run along the frame and compose the structural integrity of the ship right?
