JUNE 1000

The ice has cleared from the bays, and the sea lanes are open. The first ship has rounded the cape of southern Greenland from Iceland, bearing new-forged tools and farmers escaping the famine that has claimed the lives of those men who ply the farms of the great landowners and chieftains, scions of the first families to settle Iceland nearly 100 years ago. Before setting out, Þórsteinn Tryggvissonr, Karlsefni, Bjarni Herjólfsson and the Englishman Swiþhun of York succeed in haggling down the price of the good by 1 wealth to a total of fifteen. Bjarni Herjólfsson then spends the rest of his wealth packing away nails and rope sufficient to build a new ship, should fine timber be found. For fifteen days the ship plied the grey seas, fighting off the Greenland coast to make their way south, only through Þorsteinn's careful navigation was the ship seen safely to bright shores. The loose board that might have seen their end was to trouble them no more, for finely nailed down it was by Bjarni, the Gods would not see the sleek ship sink into the sea. (+5 renown Bjarni). Tyrker, Thrall and foster-father of Leifr, too checked the barrels of water and food to ensure that all were well-wrought and unspoiled. The Thrall was well-pleased, and no merchant lost his life for such betrayal.

Þorvaldr the husband of Freydis has brought onboard two Greenland Huskies, one male and one female. The dogs are large and warm, pleasing to the crew on cold nights. Ásgeir Þórarinsson suggests that the men of the ship should wrestle and combat amongst themselves, that they should know who among them is worthy of the holding of a sword, and who is not. (men who refuse to fight will lose 10 renown next turn unless there's some good reason, men who lose a fight will still lose 5 renown)

While the merchants of Greenland haggled with Bjarni Herjolfsson, many seemed cold and distant towards him. Those who might have once granted him fair deal as friends now looked upon him as a stranger, it would seem his renown with the merchant community has suffered (-5 renown Bjarni). It is Þórsteinn Tryggvissonr who makes the strangest impression on the merchant community however, as he attempts to procure mushrooms clothed in immense power. Fair-traded he, the mushrooms were gotten, but little did he know that fate would soon see the man parted from his mushrooms. What fates impose, that men must needs abide. (+mushrooms for Þórsteinn Tryggvissonr)

As the voyage proceeded, little to do other than gossip kept the crew busy. Þorhall the Sportsman was seen often with Freydís Eiríksdóttir, he attempting to instruct her on the proper way to handle a spear. Her husband, Þorvaldr, watched with careful eyes. One evening, while trading stories of renown, Þorhall the Sportsman began to insult the deeds of Ásgeir Þórarinsson, claiming that he was unworthy of his position far too loudly, for Ásgeir himself heard, and demanded that Þorhall either insult him as a man to his face or apologize. Ásgeir is insulted (-10 renown) and has one turn to either force an apology or otherwise gain revenge or he will lose a great deal of renown further.

On the third day, Maharg the Thrall spoke openly of some sort of debate between the Norsemen and the Christians as to matters of faith. While some have whispered that this is a fine idea, others worry that it will cause strife. Þorfinnr "Karlsefni" Þórðarson speaks to the men of the crew, offering trinkets from home and distant land, increasing his renown (+5 renown) well with the men.

In the day after his insult, Ásgeir Þórarinsson spends much time speaking of the deeds of glory he has done in the past, to help allay the sting of Þorhall's insults. He is able to regain some of his standing among the men, his renown increasing (+5 renown). He also speaks highly of Leifr, as leader of the expedition, praising the glorious journey upon which all have embarked, (+5 renown Leifr).

As the ship sails through the dark grey seas of the northern lands, Leifr and Swithin of York attempt to catch fish. The size and weight of the net slows the ship. Out of sight of land, many on the ship grow worried at the prospect of slowing the voyage, and after discussion it is agreed that it is better to sail quickly through storm-infested waters than to ensure their supplies are even greater, when they still have more than a month, and none expect the journey to last so long as that.

From the beginning of the journey, Swithin of York, foreigner and strange in custom and tongue, has kept to himself at many a time. With scrimshaw, tusk and wood, he has kept busy at carving however, and by artistry and hard work has generated goods worth 1 wealth for himself.

Hækja, Thrall of Leifr, seemed a goodly sort, often doing chores or cleaning upon the ship, that Leifr did pronounce 'Well done, thou good and faithful servant.' In ministry to the Christians she has been well, and in all things was well, however in her outspokenness, vast insult was done. She did not know that her life hung in the balance, and that free men do not reckon well the insults of a Thrall. Freydís Eiríksdóttir, upon hearing that it was Christianity which gave virtue to women, and that Norse women, without Christianity, were without womanly virtue. Freydís Eiríksdóttir is insulted (-10 renown) and has one turn to force an apology or otherwise gain revenge or she will lose a great deal of renown further. Þorvaldr Eirikssonr speaks up in defense of the Old Ways, and many find his missives on the tradition of his fathers stirring (+5 renown Þorvaldr Eirikssonr).

Throughout the trip, Guðríður Þorbjarnardóttir has been seen speaking with many men, to learn who among them had taken a wife. With her own husband just recently in the ground, a woman as fair and worthy as Guðríður, from such a fine family, would be a worthy bride. Some worry however, because when she speaks of any man, it is Leifr, and his rescue of her. (+5 renown Leifr). Though many worry at a woman's presence on the ship, her cooking and cleaning are not looked upon poorly.

On the twelfth day of sailing, Leifr discovered that the boat was being carried southwards, a strong current of cold water pushing from the north. After passing through it, the journey continued west, after some correction. The tossing of the boat in the currents made Swithin of York proclaim some charms against sea-sickness, but their lack of efficacy brought him curses from these hardy seafolk (-5 renown Swithin).

On the thirteenth day, Þórsteinn Tryggvissonr found that his mushrooms were gone. For all men love to appropriate the belongings of others. It is a universal desire; only the manner of doing it differs. (-mushrooms for Þórsteinn Tryggvissonr)

On the fourteenth day, Guðríður Þorbjarnardóttir overheard that Freydís Eiríksdóttir had spoken of her as a curse upon this boat. As Guðríður had spent time in conversation with her, the only other woman on board, for oftimes to win us to our harm, the instruments of darkness tell us truths, win us with honest trifles, to betray's in deepest consequence. Guðríður is insulted (-10 renown) and has one turn to force an apology or otherwise gain revenge or she will lose a great deal of renown further.

On the fifteenth day, land was sighted. The ship has pulled up to a southern promontory. How large this land is, and how far it extends, is known to none, for everything unknown is magnified. Whether the ship will tarry here, or sail onwards, none know save for the Gods.

Ásgeir was more than a little amused by the insult to his honor, he had nothing to prove to such a man, but he had no intent of letting the challenge go unanswered. He sought him out privately "Þorhall, I have no quarrel with you, why have you slandered me? I demand an answer, and that you publicly rescind your claims and I'll consider the matter dropped."

Leifr "The Lucky" Eiríkssonr

Crewmen we have important matters to discuss. I beseech you not to waste your energy in petty bickering or matters of conversion. As well as our trip has so far gone, there is no way to foretell when our strength may be more greatly taxed.

We must decide whether to explore this protrusion we have come to or to bypass it. It being the flowering-time of the year, we could refill our coffers and flesh out what would likely make for an excellent waystation or trading port. But we have provisions for a greater sea passage that we have so far had. This island or peninsula is certainly not fated to become the land of wine and song that our people so richly deserve. We have recently passed through a southward current, though apparently the tail end of it. If there were a guarantee of its continuing I would be happy to follow it southward; as it is, all of our choices must be considered and I hope you can give some constructive comments or advice.

He begins to examine the food stores and supplies, "We have ample food to last us a while so we can either explore more by sea or survey in land. Since we have charted the seas to get here. It will take less time to return. Nevertheless, the decision is yours."

The shore that stretches out before you seems to be part of a larger landmass, in that you can not see the end of it, it is not a small island by any means, though whether it is the peninsula of some greater land or not is impossible to tell without further exploration. There are few trees, and what trees there are seem haggard. There is no sign of human habitation, nor commerce. Birds are in great plenty, but as to animal life, there is none to be seen from the boat. Mountains rise up to the north, and they seem to be covered with snow, even in June.

(P.S. don't bother to reverse image search the images to determine where this 'is' because I just chose the images based on how they look to give an idea of the lay of the land)

Þórsteinn Tryggvissonr

"I can't imagine why... Someone would..." Þórsteinn was still in apparent shock, though thankfully not disheveled thanks to his distinctly short hair, from his missing mushrooms. He wasn't used to being so sober. Not at all. Whose idea was it to get on this boat where there aren't any shrooms? His eyes bug out a bit as he stares at the rocky cliff faces that meet the ocean. Perhaps in this moment he was supposed to see the world in its fake veil, like those who do not imbibe. A lucid moment to make his mark on the journey.

"There is nothing to be seen in this place! Birds roost here because there is nothing to eat them. The Gods themselves have given us a current to follow, and if it is to boon or bane it is not for us to decide!" There. That moment has come and gone.

"And who took my VERY IMPORTANT trade goods!? I will tell you now, I have seen that the dökkálfar will invite us into their homes, though they do not like fur and tusk- The only thing that will enchant them and bring us to their riches is THOSE MUSHROOMS!"

It seems foolhardy to potentially injure a large number of the crew in meaningless tests of strength - an unlucky blow may dash the sense out of a mans head, if it doesn't kill him! It made more sense to Maharg to join a band of explorers as a porter and maintain some small level of renown than to be accused of cowardice by staying on the boat.

"I'm not well versed in the nature of plants and animals other than those from the ocean. With that admitted, I am well versed in carrying things. With my masters permission I would gladly serve as a porter for such an expedition, carrying back whatever we may find on this place where the birds nest."

If there are no trees or land animals here for us then I can see no profit in heading north or east. Though we might luck into the occasional walrus we cannot count on being lead to that for which we came seeking. We can afford a short search for a fresh spring and if one is found we shall bring with us all the water we can take. After that we will see if we can find some continuation of the southward current lately passed.

Guðríður Þorbjarnardóttir

Fall Sick and Die posted:

On the fourteenth day, Guðríður Þorbjarnardóttir overheard that Freydís Eiríksdóttir had spoken of her as a curse upon this boat. As Guðríður had spent time in conversation with her, the only other woman on board, for oftimes to win us to our harm, the instruments of darkness tell us truths, win us with honest trifles, to betray's in deepest consequence. Guðríður is insulted (-10 renown) and has one turn to force an apology or otherwise gain revenge or she will lose a great deal of renown further.

While the others talked of what to do now that land had been sighted, Guðríður thought it time to confront Freydís over what she'd overheard her saying. There may have been a thrall or two milling about, but Guðríður paid them little mind.

"Freydís," she began, trying to sound as pleasant as she could. "I heard that you've referred to me as a curse... why? That was mean, and untrue. I'd hoped we could be friends." That was part of why she felt so insulted - she'd thought of Freydís as someone quite pleasant to gossip with. Plus she'd struck a nerve; Guðríður had felt somewhat cursed as of late.

"We found land. I'm not cursed. Please, I'm trying to be nice. Just apologize for what you said, and don't repeat it, since it isn't true. I won't hold any grudge if you do, I swear." She gave the other woman a weak smile, hoping she'd take her up on her offer but already assuming the worst.

Standing at the bow of the ship, Bjarni stares the sheer cliffs in the distance through narrowed eyes. As the other crew-members speak, he remains silent, waiting for a lull in the conversation. When it comes, he turns, speaking loudly.

"Þorsteinn is wise. If we are to explore this place, let us explore it; first by sea, and then by land. Let us learn of its coastlines, and decide upon the best landing site." He nods firmly.

"But in the meantime," he calls out, "let us celebrate the sighting of land!" Rounding on his thrall, he barks out, "Mahrag! Make yourself of use and fetch the mead! When my cheeks are flushed, we will talk of this porter business, but not a moment before!"

Don't "shhh!" me, you rich bastard!

Freydís Eiríksdóttir

Freydís finds Hækja one morning as the thrall is scrubbing the decks. She watches her work for a few minutes, making no offer to help, before saying "My brother may share your faith, but that gives you no place to denounce the gods of my fathers. We are far from your churches here, and I see no man upon a cross. This are our church," Freydis says, gesturing to the sea. She slaps the mast of the ship. "And here are our crosses. They bring us Glory, not Salvation. What you see as Virtue we better recognize as Weakness--and here, it can get you killed. So I hope, Scot, that in the future you will choose your words with better care."

Words which haunt Freydis later that day, when Guðríður confronts her.

"Cursed?" she says, taken aback. "No, Guðríður, no. Rumors have been circulating amongst some of the men, and it is true that I have been speaking with them about the unfortunate details of your peril--but not to speak ill of you! Only to remind them of Leifr's stewardship, so that we may all feel safe. But of course you are not cursed; as you say, we have found land!"

She returns the other woman's weak smile, reaching out to take her shoulder. "If my words have caused you consternation or sadness, I am sorry. Let me make it up to you. In celebration tonight I am sure the men shall want a grand feast to go with the mead Bjarni is passing about. You've spent so much time in the kitchen; let me help you tonight."

Sometimes you reach a stalemate. Sometimes you get magic horses.
Þórsteinn Tryggvissonr

Þórsteinn realizes for a moment that being so actively cowardly would not be good for him in the short nor long run. He had to do something quickly while the drink was flowing. The stonemason looks to his left, then to his right. He saw the feud and the one with drawn blood, and he is just as a shark drawn to chum. He had to let his flyt or fight instincts take- He had to relentlessly insult the person who was going to kick his rear end. With one mouthful of the mead down he recomposes himself and stands to make an announcement, "I realize that I may be unable to beat our brave skald with blade and shield. It is lucky then that I was birthed with words blunt and a tongue sharp, so that I may both break and rend the spirit of a fellow man where the bite of a blade would do little!" He finishes off his drinking cup before beginning-

http://tindeck.com/listen/laex

You ask who among us hold worth
With sword in hand, feet to earth
With shield bared, and sinew strained
But first, one wins, with careful play

For those who fight victory comes
When those who speak are too dumb
To use their words first, their brains second
And fail always, keeping their weapons stayed

For you, my skald, to hold these words dear
Would strike the hearts of many with fear
As it would mean that those with great beards
Would face a hail of words, sharp ones that shear

But you are such a man with a beard
Who must flex his thews to be heard
So your brain is left sadly alone-
As a stonemason- It's like a stone.

Your task lies with speaking
Not in fighting, nor book-keeping
So why it is that you fight with blade
Shares equal reason with those not sane

To fight is a task of last resort
When failed words follow failed retort
And failed leaders lead failed men
On task against those for words avenged

To engrave these words on your mind
Would take too long, far too much time
So instead I leave you with a thought
Bones may break, but words do not.

For those who dally
Add one tally
For Þórsteinn
Who, though soft, still has spine.

He smiles, looking on hopefully at Ásgeir, his cup raised, "And I would hope to be wronged with retort, instead of a fist pushed through my face and to the back of my head. It would make terrible days of mushroom theft even worse to be beaten and throttled."

The older thrall finds a way to speak to Hækja in hushed voices as she was doing a chore. "Dear woman," he spoke, "consider your words more carefully. Naturally we hope that all will convert, and none shall expect you to renounce your faith. But consider the position you put your master in. He has chosen to take pagans along with him, and he wishes to have this group be united. Now, his own thrall not only insults a pagan, but his own half-sister. Neither your master nor the Lord is best served by creating kinstrife in times like these. So I would ask you to exercise the virtue of humility now, and apologize to the woman."

Ásgeir smiled in good chair, raising his cup. "Fear not friend, but allow me to explain," he said rising towards Þórsteinn and turning to face the others.

"Was but a fight among friend, not foe,
a challenge of fun not fear, but though,
a craven might find cause to be
afraid, my friend I hope you see:

I spoke this challenge but to find,
to cross blades and to bind
a friendship not yet born but new
brothers in arms we are but few.

For you, I see a tricksters nature
A clever foe, not craven behaviour
Why claim foe when I only desired
To see the manner of man our captains hired?

But fair is fair, you have right of course
To challenge me in combat with verse.
But the claims you make do not offend
But it is my nature, a Skald must defend.

My task will lie with speaking, yes,
What's it say, a man who refuses to test
His strength with steel and fist
Aboard this most mighty of viking ship.

To fight is a matter of martial skill
It does not mean that one must kill
To hear you speak of 'last resort'
As if it was to kill for sport,

Does the sight of blood bring you fear?
Where will you be when battle rears?
If matching fist with friend offends,
At my side in battle will you bend?

I've tried to engrave your words upon my mind
But I'm sad to say that all they find
Is purchase on soft stone which has broke
Like a man who does not fight, and has only spoke
Who comes to face on battles eve
That he can find no reprieve
In words to face his foes mistempered steel
And with those same words he can not appeal
To the inherent nature, a Skald's curse,
Who are happy to answer in steel or in verse."

Ásgeir breaks into a smile, during his speaking he has neared Þórsteinn, and clasps him on the shoulder. He continues,

"Let it not be said that Bronsteinn
Who, though soft, still has spine.
Brave enough to face with not steel but skill
To find not with anger, but good will.

So let us say to this end,
That he has found in me, not a foe, but a friend."

He glances through his listeners before continuing a final time.

"I would never claim a craven man,
who meets me face to face, which demands
A higher honor. Instead those who skulk in shadows
An disparage men with such hollow
Remarks upon their honor then,
We should leave these matters to those Sportsmen
Who with their brawn and muscley might
Still deign to woman's talk with quiet fright
As if they might offend, if they were to hear
And fall upon the fair Skald's ears."

He releases Þórsteinn after clapping him on the shoulder again.

Leifr "The Lucky" Eiríkssonr

After reviewing logs from the last journey I find that this land is in fact very similar to that which I had previously encountered. Though we cannot immediately see the green forests we do not know whether the wide and fertile region is waiting around the corner. The sea birds' eggs and meat can sustain us as we begin to explore this place. We should sail to the northwest thusly, in order to determine whether this land is an island or a peninsula.

(OOC: You can give me a more detailed sailing path like, 'Sail northwest along the coast until it seems to show us whether this is an island or a peninsula' or something like that. Or we could do it where we sail one square at a time (representing very slow, careful exploration) but you will lose supplies faster and you'd be unable to resupply without switching to a Goal phase.)

OOC: That's a lot better, if I could place a condition it would be to go forward until the land is obviously life-sustaining or until a little before it would stop being practical to double back to that blue current for our next parley. So go forward hugging the coast for another 6 squares (18 days).

"You've have a point that its a good idea about to see what menpeople are made of but the time right to do that was before we set sail, sos thats anyone who gets debilisated could be replaced. It's too late now, the ships sailed. Any loss now, no master hows miner, is a loss we campt replace. Those here will imstemd prove myself thru hard work done eagersy, without conplaint, and made well."

(Summary/translation: If you wanted us to fight you should have done it before we sailed so we could replace any loses. Trying that now would be high risk for low gain. We'll instead prove ourselves by our labor.)

Hækja listens raptly to Freydís, flinching as the lady slaps the mast. She waits until Freyís is finished before she apologizes.

"Yes, my lady. I am sorry for my ill-chosen words. From now on, I will serve my master - and his family - through toil, not speech. Please punish me however you see fit." She bows her head, expecting the blow to come.

Guðríður Þorbjarnardóttir

She was kind, not stupid. "If it's as you say... would you please just tell everyone that whoever said those awful things was lying? I'm sure everyone would believe you." With that, she mumbled an excuse about being thirsty and left Freydís to hopefully consider setting things right. Guðríður knew what she'd overheard, but maybe Freydís was embarrassed and didn't want to admit to having spoken ill of her. As long as she stopped getting weird looks from some of the crew, she'd be happy even if Freydís wasn't willing to come clean.

As for her offer, Guðríður wasn't terribly inclined to accept, at least before the other woman more-or-less apologized by repudiating her statement. Spending time around someone who's hurt you isn't all that much fun, and Guðríður didn't feel the need to unnecessarily subject herself to it.

As the days sped forward, Leifr pushed the ship on its course to determine the extent of the land they had sighted. Rounding the southwestern end of the unknown land, the ship erupted into cheers to see fine forest lands. On the fourth day of travel through this region, smoke was seen far inland, though whether set by natural causes or the skill of man was unknown.

Many among the crew said that this must be the fine land that Leifr had seen before. Those who had journeyed there said the landscape reminded them of the Western Isles. Yet Leifr pressed on, determined to discover more.

Hitting a strong southern current, the voyage to map the western coastline took longer than expected. After 24 days from their initial discovery of the promontory, the further north they traveled, the colder and more desolate did the land become, until it seemed no different than much of Greenland itself.

Here the land broke up, split by fjords and inlets which made travel difficult, for every passage taken, a return and second attempt along another strait. To continue to the north and east would risk the ship upon unknown seas, shallow and treacherous, the chance of difficult passage is high.
